{"id":94701,"date":"2024-07-30T15:45:19","date_gmt":"2024-07-30T19:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=94701"},"modified":"2024-07-30T15:45:19","modified_gmt":"2024-07-30T19:45:19","slug":"remembering-alan-earp-brocks-longest-serving-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/07\/remembering-alan-earp-brocks-longest-serving-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering Alan Earp, Brock\u2019s longest-serving President"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University\u2019s second and longest-serving President, Alan Earp, has died at the age of 99.<\/p>\n<p>Earp, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/obituary-argyll-and-sutherland-highlanders-member-alan-earp\/article_e9088a64-e08f-5af7-a088-169f38c3487b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died July 7<\/a> in Montreal, Que., led the University from 1974 to 1988 through a critical early period in the institution\u2019s history. During his tenure, Brock experienced considerable growth that saw enrolment soar in the 1980s as the University developed a national reputation for excellence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dedicated and visionary leadership of Dr. Earp helped lay the groundwork for Brock to become the comprehensive University it is today,\u201d says Lesley Rigg, President and Vice-Chancellor. \u201cHis invaluable guidance through the University\u2019s early days has impacted generations of learners and will continue to do so as Brock enters its next 60 years. We\u2019re grateful for his lasting contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Earp\u2019s impact was clearly felt in academia, it was not the only field through which he made his mark.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_94706\" style=\"width: 392px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/three-presidents-Terry-White-fonds-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94706\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-94706\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/three-presidents-Terry-White-fonds-1050x819.jpg\" alt=\"Three men wearing suits stand together in an office space.\" width=\"382\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-94706\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Brock University Presidents Alan Earp, James Gibson and Terry White.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the Second World War, Earp served as a lieutenant with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada, commanding the Pioneer Platoon in western Europe before being severely wounded in April 1945. The group <a href=\"http:\/\/argylls.ca\/history\/col-earp-97th-birthday.html?fbclid=IwY2xjawEV-hZleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHQepWtiEBwfbBz8RE4UwPDJZghbETq9O0vhCRMfGizW7iFPAf25Q2qSGQw_aem_fvbjP9VTler5KMMkDXkvhg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continued to pay homage to Earp<\/a>, who was the regiment\u2019s last surviving officer from the Second World War, throughout his life.<\/p>\n<p>Earp\u2019s career in education saw him go on to hold several senior positions at educational institutions across Canada and abroad before joining Brock as Provost in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>In 1987, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada for his leadership and contributions to post-secondary education in Ontario and Canada, including serving as president of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and the Canadian Bureau of International Education.<\/p>\n<p>Brock honoured Earp for his meaningful impact by presenting him with an honorary doctorate in 1990. In 2000, the University named its then-newest campus residence building after him.
