{"id":94489,"date":"2024-07-18T16:06:56","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T20:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=94489"},"modified":"2024-07-18T16:30:54","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T20:30:54","slug":"early-success-sets-stage-for-dart-grads-bright-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/07\/early-success-sets-stage-for-dart-grads-bright-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Early success sets stage for DART grad&#8217;s bright future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock graduate Jasmine Case (BA \u201920) is making waves in the Canadian theatre scene by bringing stories of diversity to life for audiences, garnering the attention of national arts and culture media and earning a highly esteemed acting award in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Case was recently honoured at the 2024 annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards winning the award for Outstanding Performance by an Individual in the Theatre for Young Audiences Division for her compelling performance in <em>Truth <\/em>by Kanika Ambrose, a world premiere at Young People&#8217;s Theatre in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the novel <em>The Gospel Truth<\/em> by Caroline Pignat and directed by Sabryn Rock, <em>Truth <\/em>follows the journey of a courageous young Black girl named Phoebe, played by Case, struggling to find freedom while living on a tobacco plantation in Virginia in 1858.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe history of the United States and Canada is forever marred by the many Black and Indigenous stories erased and forgotten. Often, our stories don\u2019t get rewritten by us; with Kanika Ambrose writing the play and Sabryn Rock directing, I knew I was in good hands,\u201d Case said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_94491\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94491\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-94491\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Jasmine-Case-Headshot-699x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A portrait headshot shoes a young Black woman with curly hair from the shoulders up. She is smiling warmly at the camera with gold hoop earrings and a gold necklace.\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-94491\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jasmine Case (BA \u201920) recently received the 2024 Dora Mavor Moore Awards in the Theatre for Young Audiences Division for her performance in Truth by Kanika Ambrose.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Diverse representation has only recently started to improve and, as a Black woman, Case rarely saw people like her on stage when she was growing up.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking of the kids who would be sitting in the audience learning and being fascinated by the world while feeling the emotions of her character sold Case on the role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy going through this journey as Phoebe, I hoped people would walk away with a slightly deeper understanding or empathy for those who dealt with similar hardships,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Case first discovered her love for the stage during Brock\u2019s Dramatic Arts (DART) program \u00a0when she auditioned for her first mainstage production <em>King Ubu<\/em> at the University\u2019s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was that production, and how I felt on stage, which made me truly fall in love with acting as a career. I had always wanted to act \u2014\u00a0I was always the kid up on any stage I could get on \u2014\u00a0but I just never thought that I would have a successful career in it, or a Dora award for that matter\u201d Case said.<\/p>\n<p>From that point on, Case motivated herself to be the best actor she could be, harnessing the support of DART faculty, students and classmates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was Brock that showed me theatre wasn\u2019t just a pastime or a hobby, it was actually something I could do as a career,\u201d Case said.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation, Case was accepted into the prestigious National Theatre School (NTS) where she studied for three years before deepening her creative practice by participating in workshops with heavy-hitting theatre companies including Tarragon Theatre and Persephone Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Case has been in several theatre productions including <em>The Fianc\u00e9e<\/em> at Chemainus Festival Theatre, <em>Truth<\/em> at Young People\u2019s Theatre and most recently the Canadian premiere of <em>seven methods of killing kylie jenner<\/em>, a Globe and Mail Critic\u2019s Pick, by Jasmine Lee-Jones at Obsidian and Crow\u2019s Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>As Case celebrates the significant accomplishment of receiving a Dora nomination and award \u2014\u00a0from Canada\u2019s oldest and largest professional theatre awards celebrating excellence on the stage \u2014 she has new productions and creative works on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>Professor David Fancy said the Department of Dramatic Arts is delighted with her success so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJasmine\u2019s contributions during her time in DART at Brock were marked by generosity, talent, and insight,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can\u2019t wait to see what comes next on Jasmine\u2019s impressive career trajectory.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock graduate Jasmine Case (BA \u201920) is making waves in the Canadian theatre scene by bringing stories of diversity to life for audiences, garnering the attention of national arts and culture media and earning a highly esteemed acting award in the process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":62,"featured_media":94492,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[119,37,1],"tags":[3333,5521,283,6442,656,13713,109,30,13714],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/94489"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/62"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=94489"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/94489\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":94494,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/94489\/revisions\/94494"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/94492"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=94489"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=94489"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=94489"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
