Brock\u2019s Faculty of Mathematics and Science (FMS) Undergraduate Research Symposium is back for its second year, and student participants and judges are invited to register.<\/p>\n
Set to take place Thursday, Aug. 8 from 3 to 6 p.m. in Pond Inlet, the conference will exhibit posters outlining research conducted by FMS undergraduate students in any year of study.<\/p>\n
Assistant Professor of Physics Gavin Hester, the event’s lead organizer, encourages students to submit a poster presentation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic opportunity for students to hone their presentation skills, network with fellow students and faculty, and showcase their remarkable research,\u201d he says. “Participating in the symposium can also enhance students\u2019 resum\u00e9s, provide valuable feedback from experts in their field, and open doors to future research and career opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition to creating a poster, presenters are advised to prepare a three to five-minute speech introducing their poster to judges and event attendees. Volunteer judges will evaluate students\u2019 poster presentations, with anonymous comments and ratings given to each student researcher following the symposium.<\/p>\n
Cash prizes funded by Scion Instruments will be awarded to three students in recognition of outstanding poster presentations.<\/p>\n
Faculty members are encouraged to invite undergraduate students from their research groups to participate. Research being presented can be in progress or completed, and researchers who graduated within the past year are welcome to participate.<\/p>\n
The deadline for students to register a poster presentation<\/a> is Monday, July 15.<\/p>\n Faculty, librarians, staff and graduate student volunteers are sought to serve as poster judges. To volunteer, complete a poster judge registration form.<\/a><\/p>\n The Brock community is invited to attend the symposium and advance registration is not required. Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided.<\/p>\n Last year\u2019s inaugural event<\/a> featured 20 student presenters and was attended by representatives from across FMS and the University.<\/p>\n More information is available on the FMS Undergraduate Research Symposium web page<\/a>, including guidelines for preparing a research poster.
