{"id":93824,"date":"2024-06-13T21:20:52","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T01:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=93824"},"modified":"2024-06-14T10:02:11","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T14:02:11","slug":"brock-grad-walks-across-convocation-stage-after-rare-condition-left-her-paralyzed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/06\/brock-grad-walks-across-convocation-stage-after-rare-condition-left-her-paralyzed\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock grad walks across Convocation stage after rare condition left her paralyzed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Walking across the stage to receive a university degree is a major milestone in any student\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>But after six years of hard work and dedication, Sophie Roy (BA &#8217;24, BEd &#8217;24) wasn\u2019t sure she was going to get that chance.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks before she was set to graduate from Brock University on Thursday, June 13, the 24-year-old underwent emergency spinal surgery to treat a rare condition that left her paralyzed from the waist down.<\/p>\n<p>Attending Convocation was left in limbo, and \u201cthat nearly broke my heart because I&#8217;ve worked so, so hard,\u201d Roy said.<\/p>\n<p>The Hunstville, Ont., native had been diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that occurs when a collection of nerves that rest at the base of the spinal cord become compressed. This cuts off sensation and movement to the legs, bladder and bowel.<\/p>\n<p>After undergoing a major surgery to treat the condition, Roy was transferred to the Lyndhurst Centre, a Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, to undergo specialized care to regain motor and organ function.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_93826\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/SophieGraceRoy_23-1-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93826\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-93826\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/SophieGraceRoy_23-1-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Two women in graduation gowns stand side-by-side smiling in the outdoors.\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-93826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sophie Roy (BA &#8217;24, BEd &#8217;24), left, celebrates her graduation day with her sister, Phoebe Roy (BScN &#8217;20). Roy graduated from Brock\u2019s Concurrent Education program with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education on Thursday, June 13.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the days leading up to her graduation from Brock\u2019s Concurrent Education program, where she would receive both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education, Roy wasn\u2019t sure when \u2014 or even if \u2014 she would walk again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was super traumatic and really discouraging,\u201d she said. \u201cMy life had changed forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her father and fellow Brock graduate Jeff Roy (BAdmin \u201986) said progress happened incrementally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive days ago, we didn&#8217;t know if she could even come [to graduation] in a wheelchair,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Then, Roy sat up.<\/p>\n<p>She stood.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, she began to walk again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne day she started to walk, and then more, and then more,\u201d he said. \u201cShe was moving her foot an inch, and then oh, wait a minute, let\u2019s go a little farther.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it was finally time to take the walk across the stage, he and Roy\u2019s mother, Janice, watched eagerly in the audience.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tAZFh5ju0Qw?si=aGn52Iqu5c22t-r-\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Roy\u2019s sister, fellow Brock graduate Phoebe Roy (BScN &#8217;20), stood close by in case she needed a helping hand.<\/p>\n<p>But Roy walked from one end of the stage to the other completely unassisted \u2014 and on her own terms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy surgery was two weeks ago, and I was able to go to my graduation and walk across the stage. Honestly, it&#8217;s purely a miracle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also because I had my family advocating for me 24-7. I have people willing to drop everything and who consider it a privilege to be able to come into one of the worst valleys and one of the scariest seasons of my life. That&#8217;s a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her sister, who is currently a pediatric nurse in Cambridge, said she couldn\u2019t be prouder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was amazing; I was sitting on the ramp and just weeping,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen we were in the hospital [Sophie] said, \u2018I\u2019m not going to be able to go to grad,\u2019 and I said, \u2019Oh, you are walking across that stage.\u2019 And so, she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phoebe added that she was humbled to be able to apply the skills she learned during her nursing studies, as well as from volunteering in Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/bfit\/in-person-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Power Cord program<\/a> for people with spinal cord injuries, in such a meaningful way.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_93827\" style=\"width: 463px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/SophieGraceRoy_28-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93827\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-93827 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/SophieGraceRoy_28-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Four people, two in graduation gowns, stand outdoors together.\" width=\"453\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-93827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Roy family (from left), Jeff, Sophie, Janice and Phoebe, came together to celebrate Sophie&#8217;s graduation from Brock University on Thursday, June 13.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While Roy admits there are still many hurdles to overcome, the experience has only strengthened her passion for teaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock has equipped me with the pedagogical knowledge, certainly, to be able to teach students,\u201d she said. \u201cNow, I want to get into a classroom to test out all of this knowledge and see how it actually applies with real kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once she is discharged from the rehab facility, Roy plans to spend her summer focusing on her recovery, spending much-needed time with her dogs and completing some online courses to further bolster her qualifications.<\/p>\n<p>She also hopes to find a position teaching primary-level French soon \u2014 following in the footsteps of her mother, who also taught French.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love teaching because it\u2019s about helping people and empowering people,\u201d Roy said. \u201cI\u2019ve been told \u2018you may never walk again,\u2019 and I was walking just days post-op, so I\u2019m kind of putting to bed telling kids what they can\u2019t do and really encouraging kids to believe in what they can do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Walking across the stage to receive a university degree is a major milestone in any student\u2019s life.
