{"id":93180,"date":"2024-05-30T14:29:38","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T18:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=93180"},"modified":"2024-05-30T17:58:03","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T21:58:03","slug":"webinar-to-focus-on-research-helping-teens-access-mental-health-supports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/05\/webinar-to-focus-on-research-helping-teens-access-mental-health-supports\/","title":{"rendered":"Webinar to focus on research helping teens access mental health supports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Brock-led research team has created a new toolkit to help youth overcome barriers to accessing mental health supports at school and in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Brock University Associate Professor of Health Sciences Karen Patte and her research team will be discussing their work on teen mental health as well as their new package of resources \u2014 called North Star Mental Health \u2014 during an upcoming public webinar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElevating Youth Voices: Facilitating Access to Mental Health Resources in Schools\u201d takes place Tuesday, June 4 from noon to 1 p.m. The webinar is free, but <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/research-at-brock\/elevating-youth\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Youth%20voices%20webinar%20-%20First%20email%20-%20June%202024&amp;utm_content=Youth%20voices%20webinar%20-%20First%20email%20-%20June%202024+CID_1f37981baf63d486046155ceb7108e1f&amp;utm_source=Campaign%20Monitor%20ORS&amp;utm_term=httpsbrockucaresearch-at-brockelevating-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registration is required<\/a><em>. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Patte, Brock\u2019s Canada Research Chair in Child Health Equity and Inclusion, co-leads the national <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/compass-system\/compass-system-projects\/past-projects\/compass-cihr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COMPASS study<\/a>, which has been gathering data from high school students since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Patte and her team received <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/12\/brock-led-team-awarded-294000-by-sickkids-cihr-to-study-impact-of-covid-on-youth-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a grant<\/a> from SickKids Hospital and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to study the impact of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on the mental health of youth attending high school.<\/p>\n<p>The team interviewed 30 high school students from four provinces about their mental health experiences during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, many of the answers the team got transcended pandemic impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents told us that they and their peers lacked knowledge about what mental health support was available to them, how to access it, and how and where to find accurate information on available resources,\u201d says Negin Riazi, a former Brock postdoctoral researcher and Co-Lead on the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we asked how best to reach youth with this information, they said loud and clear: social media and in schools,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Patte, Riazi and their team created the North Star Mental Health package of resources for both schools and students to increase access to mental health resources.
