{"id":9310,"date":"2011-04-07T13:12:12","date_gmt":"2011-04-07T18:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=9310"},"modified":"2011-04-11T10:59:07","modified_gmt":"2011-04-11T15:59:07","slug":"ward-remembers-life-as-a-graduate-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/04\/ward-remembers-life-as-a-graduate-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Ward will recall life as a grad student at Mapping conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9311\" style=\"width: 346px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9311\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9311 \" title=\"Wendy Ward\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/wendyward2.jpg\" alt=\"Wendy Ward\" width=\"336\" height=\"189\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wendy Ward<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When Wendy Ward looks back on her graduate work, she will never forget the first time she stood up and presented her ideas to an auditorium of researchers, including leading experts from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a combination of excitement and nerves &#8211; and excitement won out,\u201d said Ward, an associate professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/applied-health-sciences\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Applied Health Sciences<\/a> and Brock\u2019s 12th Canada Research Chair. \u201cThat experience is so important to graduate students. It tells you that you have a very unique and valued role in research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward will talk about the \u201cbreadth of knowledge\u201d she gained as a graduate researcher in her keynote address at the sixth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\/conferences-events\/mapping-the-new-knowledges-gra\" target=\"_blank\">Mapping the New Knowledges<\/a> Graduate Student Research Conference, set for Thursday, April 14. Ward will speak at 9 a.m. in the fourth floor mezzanine area of the Plaza building.<\/p>\n<p>All are welcome to attend the day-long event that showcases the range and diversity of graduate student research during panel and poster presentations. See the conference schedule of events at <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\/conferences-events\" target=\"_blank\">Graduate Studies conferences and events<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to sharing my own story and what I view as the most important qualities of a successful graduate student \u2013 the student who goes on to be a leader in his or her chosen field,\u201d Ward said.<a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\/conferences-events\/mapping-the-new-knowledges-gra\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9312\" title=\"Mapping the New Knowledges logo\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/mappinglogosm2.jpg\" alt=\"Mapping the New Knowledges logo\" width=\"184\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s graduate students couldn\u2019t be getting better advice. Ward is recognized around the world for her work in the area of nutrition and bone health. As well, her remarks will stem from her own experience in supervising students. She currently is a graduate supervisor to two PhD students and three MSc students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Ward&#8217;s story will be of great interest to our graduate students,\u201d said Marilyn Rose, Dean, <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Graduate Studies<\/a>. \u201cWhen world-class researchers speak of their own engagement as graduate students and their subsequent path to outstanding research success, it is always inspiring to students and faculty alike. I very much look forward to her presentation on April 14.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ward was a tenured professor in the University of Toronto\u2019s Faculty of Medicine before coming to Brock earlier this year.  She holds a cross-appointment with the <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/applied-health-sciences\/academic-departments\/comm-health-sciences\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Community Health Sciences<\/a> and is also a member of the Centre for Muscle Metabolism and Biophysics.<\/p>\n<p>Her research shows that early diet could help lead to a lifetime of healthier bones. There are no ideal treatments for osteoporosis. But prevention strategies that target the earliest stages of life may be the key to preventing poor quality of life and even death \u2013 both potential effects of osteoporosis-related fractures.
