{"id":92754,"date":"2024-05-10T17:23:11","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T21:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=92754"},"modified":"2024-07-20T10:22:22","modified_gmt":"2024-07-20T14:22:22","slug":"teens-build-stem-skills-at-annual-brock-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/05\/teens-build-stem-skills-at-annual-brock-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Teens build STEM skills at annual Brock conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Robot races, DNA fingerprinting and photonics were among the projects young scientists explored this week during Brock University\u2019s 34rd annual <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/mathematics-science\/scientificallyyours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scientifically Yours<\/a> conference.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by Brock\u2019s Faculty of Mathematics and Science, the event was created to encourage young people to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by offering engaging hands-on lab activities and mentorship experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to increase the confidence of high school students to pursue STEM fields in their post-secondary education,\u201d says Co-organizer Christene Carpenter-Cleland, Senior Laboratory Demonstrator with Brock\u2019s Biological Sciences Department.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the conference, held Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10, each student participated in six <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/mathematics-science\/scientificallyyours\/about\/#projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM projects<\/a> in fields ranging from psychology and health sciences to chemistry and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past three decades, projects have evolved and changed,\u201d says Carpenter-Cleland. \u201cTwo new projects this year was analytical testing of snack foods and the psychology of procrastination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students also took part in recreational activities, networked with professional scientists at a mentors\u2019 dinner and attended a panel discussion to learn from current Brock students and professionals who have careers in the sciences.
