{"id":92648,"date":"2024-05-07T14:47:10","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T18:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=92648"},"modified":"2024-05-15T21:01:27","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T01:01:27","slug":"community-crafted-motherhood-games-to-shine-on-mothers-day-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/05\/community-crafted-motherhood-games-to-shine-on-mothers-day-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Community-crafted \u2018motherhood\u2019 games to shine on Mother\u2019s Day weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Score points with Mom this weekend by putting yourself in her shoes.<\/p>\n<p>A variety of games celebrating motherhood and all that it entails will be ready for the testing Saturday, May 11 at a free community event hosted by Brock\u2019s Department of Digital Humanities (DDH) and the St. Catharines Public Library (SCPL).<\/p>\n<p>Held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library\u2019s Central Branch, the family-friendly drop-in event will feature tabletop games inspired by the community\u2019s thoughts on motherhood and developed as the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/02\/brock-game-jam-series-puts-spotlight-on-motherhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mother of All Game Jams<\/a>, an innovative event that took place in February and was led by Brock University Assistant Professor Sarah Stang.<\/p>\n<p>The game jam brought the community together to reflect on their notions of motherhood and create thematic games based on their ideas with the support of DDH faculty and students lending their creative and technical expertise.<\/p>\n<p>The games will be available at Saturday\u2019s showcase for attendees to play and provide feedback on \u2014 a key part of game creation, says Stang.<\/p>\n<p>With names such as \u201cHectic Household Hustle,\u201d which sees players roleplay as mother and child, each with their own goals to accomplish, and \u201cThe Mother Load,\u201d where players must balance chores, child care and their own well-being, it\u2019s clear motherhood is not child\u2019s play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShowcasing the games for the community not only encourages everyone to think about what it means to be a mother and to grow their interest in game design, but it\u2019s also a way to get valuable feedback on how these games portray the experience of motherhood,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>To kick off the festivities, Stang will share reflections on how the games have evolved since their inception at the previous game jam.
