{"id":92625,"date":"2024-05-06T14:05:49","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T18:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=92625"},"modified":"2024-05-06T16:16:47","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T20:16:47","slug":"brock-research-highlighted-at-niagara-health-research-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/05\/brock-research-highlighted-at-niagara-health-research-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock research highlighted at Niagara Health Research Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than two dozen Brock University students and faculty showcased research that supports a healthier community last week at Niagara Health\u2019s fourth-annual Niagara Health Knowledge Institute Research Day.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by Niagara College on Wednesday, May 2, this year\u2019s conference focused on the theme of inclusion of equity-deserving groups in research. Participants shared research dedicated to improving overall health and well-being, patient outcomes and how health care is delivered through poster and oral presentations.<\/p>\n<p>Brock PhD in Child and Youth Studies student Rebekah Norman presented a poster discussing findings from her master\u2019s thesis research about young caregivers\u2019 experiences with the health and education sector.<\/p>\n<p>She says the event provided her with a space to bring young carers&#8217; stories to practice settings and to front-line health and education professionals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy findings join a growing body of research that suggests young carers are unrecognized and unsupported in their health and education,\u201d said Norman. &#8220;It is my hope that by attending and presenting at Niagara Health Research Day, health and education professionals in the Niagara region may have a greater awareness of young carers&#8217; experiences and care roles.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_92627\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92627\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-92627\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Niagara-Health-Research-Day-Halla-Naamneh-Yassin-840x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A woman stands at a podium that reads \u201cNiagara College\u201d with a large screen behind her projecting a presentation on \u201cExploring the Experiences of Mothers of Autistics Children who Engage in Physical Active Leisure (PAL).\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-92627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Halla Naamneh Yassin, a Master of Arts in Applied Health Sciences student specializing in Leisure, Health and Wellbeing, gave a presentation on her research, which explores the experiences of mothers of autistic children who engage in physically active leisure.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Halla Naamneh Yassin, a second-year Brock Master of Arts in Applied Health Sciences student specializing in Leisure, Health and Well-being, was one of only two Brock students invited to give an oral presentation. She discussed her thesis research, which explores the experiences of mothers of autistic children who engage in physically active leisure.<\/p>\n<p>During one of the conference\u2019s breakout sessions, Associate Professor of Health Sciences Madelyn Law, who is currently seconded to Niagara Health as its Director, Quality, Patient Safety and Risk, facilitated a discussion on improving health services through change sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>The annual research day is a celebration of Niagara Health\u2019s continued evolution as a learning health system, which depends on its continued relationships with community partners, including Brock University, Niagara College, McMaster University\u2019s Michael G.
