{"id":92189,"date":"2024-04-12T14:21:18","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T18:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=92189"},"modified":"2024-04-12T17:06:57","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T21:06:57","slug":"building-better-research-workshop-to-focus-on-open-access-publishing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/04\/building-better-research-workshop-to-focus-on-open-access-publishing\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Better Research workshop to focus on open access publishing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The final Building Better Research (BBR) workshop of Winter Term aims to help researchers and staff to plan for open access (OA) publishing without breaking the bank.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop takes place at noon on Wednesday, April 17 via Microsoft Teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen access is considered the best way to increase the impact of research while bringing many benefits to society and community,\u201d says Research and Scholarly Communication Librarian Elizabeth Yates. \u201cHowever, while APCs are sometimes associated with open access publishing, there are many strategies which can help researchers achieve open access for little or no cost \u2014 the key is planning ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the workshop, Yates will discuss several options including no-fee publishing, publisher discounts, sharing research through the Brock Digital Repository and building article processing charges (APCs) into grant funding applications.<\/p>\n<p>Workshop participants will also learn about the Library\u2019s OA supports and other strategies for achieving open access, including information about the growing number of agreements that have been negotiated to support researchers interested in publishing in journals that charge article processing fees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now have new agreements in place that offer Brock authors either full coverage of APC payments or discounts for a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/open-access\/open-access-investments\/#1675264614266-ad3c5d97-5fef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major publication outlets<\/a>, including Elsevier, Public Library of Science and Oxford University Press,\u201d says Yates. \u201cThis is big news which will enable <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/03\/brock-library-enhancing-open-access-publishing-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock researchers to enhance their impact<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to open access agreements with large commercial publishers, the Library also supports <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/open-access\/open-access-investments\/#1675264614275-fb454312-9849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent publishing platforms<\/a> developed by the academic community. New additions include the <a href=\"https:\/\/openbookcollective.org\/view\/collections\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Book Collective Scholar Led Package<\/a> of six academic-led, non-profit, born-OA book publishers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sherpa Romeo<\/a>, a vital tool for helping researchers understand how they can share their journal articles without violating publisher copyright policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community-controlled platforms take a more equitable and sustainable approach to open access dissemination by removing publishing fees,\u201d says Yates.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about open access support or to see a comprehensive list of publisher agreements visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/open-access\/open-access-investments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock Library website<\/a>.
