{"id":92021,"date":"2024-04-05T12:36:24","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T16:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=92021"},"modified":"2024-04-05T20:36:41","modified_gmt":"2024-04-06T00:36:41","slug":"brock-professor-emeritus-makes-mark-on-prestigious-historical-encyclopedia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/04\/brock-professor-emeritus-makes-mark-on-prestigious-historical-encyclopedia\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock professor emeritus makes mark on prestigious historical encyclopedia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since his retirement in 2003, Leonard Rosmarin has shown no signs of slowing.<\/p>\n<p>The momentum around his work outside the classroom, where he once shared his knowledge as a Brock French Professor, has continued to grow, as has his reputation as an expert in his field.<\/p>\n<p>The 85-year-old Professor Emeritus recently spent time contributing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albin-michel.fr\/histoire-juive-de-la-france-9782226448033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Histoire juive de la France<\/em><\/a>, a prestigious French encyclopedia documenting the history of Jewish people in Europe. Published by famed French publisher Albin Michel under the direction of Sylvie Anne Goldberg, the project spans from Roman times up to the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>The only Canadian invited to contribute, Rosmarin wrote 10 articles for the publication alongside authors from the Sorbonne, Oxford University, Cornell University, Berkeley, Yale and Princeton, among others.<\/p>\n<p>In October, he attended the publication launch at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art et d\u2019histoire du juda\u00efsme (Museum of Judaic Art and History) in Paris, France, which brought together international contributors and editors to celebrate the accomplishment with the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe launch was a memorable, glittering affair and an important cultural event that included authors, media personalities as well as representatives from other publishing houses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Since retiring from Brock, Rosmarin has written 10 books \u2014 releasing one every other year \u2014 including critical studies, translations and a novel. He has also delivered many guest lectures at various educational institutions, including the Sorbonne.<\/p>\n<p>When Rosmarin began teaching French at Brock in 1969 in the Department of Romance Languages \u2014 now the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities \u2014 he felt he was making a difference in people\u2019s lives through his teaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a professor was inspiring and motivating work that I loved to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Supported by his parents, Rosmarin learned from a young age about education\u2019s life-altering potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents knew that knowledge was your liquid capital, and something you could never be stripped of no matter where you went or what happened to you,\u201d said Rosmarin, who would go on to receive his PhD in French from Yale. \u201cThis concept gave me the strength to be the best I could be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He excelled as part of Brock\u2019s faculty, going on to chair his department three times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had a wonderful life and career, I look back at it very fondly,\u201d Rosmarin said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since his retirement in 2003, Leonard Rosmarin has shown no signs of slowing. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":62,"featured_media":92022,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[37,1],"tags":[4623,30,13415,4624,9742],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/92021"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/62"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=92021"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/92021\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":92023,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/92021\/revisions\/92023"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/92022"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=92021"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=92021"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=92021"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
