{"id":91881,"date":"2024-04-01T15:03:05","date_gmt":"2024-04-01T19:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=91881"},"modified":"2024-04-01T17:38:39","modified_gmt":"2024-04-01T21:38:39","slug":"biological-sciences-student-wins-top-spot-at-brock-3mt-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/04\/biological-sciences-student-wins-top-spot-at-brock-3mt-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Biological Sciences student wins top spot at Brock 3MT competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of 12 graduate students went head-to-head on Thursday, March 28 for a chance to represent Brock at the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) provincial finals this May.<\/p>\n<p>First-place winner Zoe Gagnon (BSc \u201923) captivated the audience and judges with her presentation of \u201cThe role of semaphorin 3A on hippocampal plasticity in the adult mouse brain,\u201d taking home the People\u2019s Choice award<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great feeling as it confirms that the audience is understanding the complex research I\u2019m putting out there,\u201d said Gagnon. \u201cTrying to contextualize protein biochemistry so people can understand and get excited about it in three minutes was one of the biggest challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The competition, which originated in Australia in 2008, encourages students to exercise their knowledge mobilization skills by summarizing their research in just three minutes using plain, accessible terms and a single slide image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a fast-paced society where knowledge translation and effective communication is key, the 3MT competition equips grad students with the tools they need to effectively share their research and make a lasting impact on broad audiences,\u201d said Kim Kelly, Director of Strategic Operations and Management in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Winners of the Brock 2024 3MT competition include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First place and People\u2019s Choice Award: Zoe Gagnon, Biological Sciences master&#8217;s student, \u201cThe role of semaphorin 3A on hippocampal plasticity in the adult mouse brain\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Second place: James Mesich, Biological Sciences master&#8217;s student, \u201cWhy we do science\u201d\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Third place: Alyssa Brew (BA &#8217;23), Critical Sociology master&#8217;s student, \u201cAfter-Effects: Online Response to the Young Adult Series &#8220;After&#8221;
