{"id":91752,"date":"2024-03-25T16:19:24","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T20:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=91752"},"modified":"2024-05-01T10:15:14","modified_gmt":"2024-05-01T14:15:14","slug":"brock-farm-partnership-tests-wool-as-sustainable-soil-enhancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/03\/brock-farm-partnership-tests-wool-as-sustainable-soil-enhancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock-farm partnership tests wool as sustainable soil enhancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Jennifer Osborn and her partner added two sheep to their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allsortsacres.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">farm<\/a>\u00a0almost 20 years ago, their aim was to produce wool that could be used to make clothing and other goods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As their sheep multiplied, so did the wool piling up after each shearing. Osborn searched for buyers but wondered if she needed to find a new market for her product.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through a partnership with Brock University researchers, she\u2019s now exploring a solution that not only addresses her own dilemma but also offers farmers a sustainable option to support crop growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After coming across reports that wool enhances soil, Osborn launched a business,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ecowool.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EcoWool Canada<\/a>, that markets the fibre as a potential natural fertilizer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe one thing I&#8217;m consistently asked about is the research needed to explain what wool does to the soil,\u201d says Osborn. \u201cI can tell you anything I want, but there needs to be scientific data to show that our wool pellets enrich the soil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get data, Osborn turned to Brock, which is a member of the Ontario-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greenhousetechnetwork.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenhouse Technology Network<\/a>\u00a0(GTN). The University,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/03\/brock-research-farm-to-grow-future-of-sustainable-agriculture-in-canada-with-3-5m-cfi-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">through a series of research projects<\/a>, has been working to enhance the sustainable agriculture sector and is launching a research farm to continue these efforts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor of Biology Liette Vasseur and Assistant Professor of Chemistry Vaughn Mangal are working with Osbourn to determine the effectiveness of EcoWool\u2019s pellets as a soil amendment to improve soil health, fertility and crop performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.pa.gov\/Plants_Land_Water\/PlantIndustry\/agronomic-products\/SoilPlantAmendment\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soil amendment<\/a>\u00a0is any substance \u2014 excluding fertilizers, pesticides, agricultural lime and untreated manures \u2014 that aims to change chemical or physical characteristics of soil.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/materials-science\/wool-fiber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a>\u00a0shows wool contains\u00a0carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, which are among the elements that boost soil quality. Wool\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.woolmark.com\/industry\/research\/wool-is-biodegradable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provides further benefit<\/a>\u00a0by aerating the soil, retaining moisture, improving water infiltration and reducing erosion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To test EcoWool\u2019s wool pellets, Vasseur and Mangal are growing spinach, sweet peppers, marigolds, basil and yellow beans in pots containing either pellets, conventional fertilizers or nothing added to the soil at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every activity is being recorded during the experiment, such as how much water is added, and plants are monitored and weighed at the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After harvesting the crops, the researchers will use sophisticated instruments at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/vpmi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock-Niagara Validation, Prototyping and Manufacturing Institute<\/a>\u00a0(VPMI) to measure organic carbon and nitrogen quantity and quality of soil and water samples.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re doing is saturating the soil in the pots so that water comes out of the soil,\u201d says Mangal. \u201cWe then collect the leaching water for nutrient and carbon analysis to see how much carbon and nutrients are retained and lost in soils containing the EcoWool pellets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This research wouldn&#8217;t be possible without the cutting-edge analytical equipment at the VPMI,\u201d says Mangal. \u201cAccess to this equipment has allowed us to bridge soil chemistry, carbon cycling and plant physiology towards developing more sustainable greenhouse practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mangal and Vasseur have completed one round of growing and harvesting the plants and will undergo another 55-day experiment of growing, monitoring, harvesting and soil testing before they produce their final report for EcoWool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to supporting Osborn\u2019s company, Vasseur says the research may encourage the greenhouse industry in Niagara and beyond to use wool pellets as an environmentally sustainable way to boost their crops\u2019 soils.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vasseur notes that peat moss \u2014 harvested from natural peatlands that take thousands of years to regenerate \u2014 is currently being used in the industry to increase soil balance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf more carbon is stored in the soil, EcoWool pellets may also partially replace peat moss,\u201d she says, adding that peatlands are one of the most important habitats that absorb carbon dioxide and therefore need to be protected to mitigate climate change impacts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osborn is also passionate about protecting the environment. It\u2019s \u201ccommon practice\u201d for sheep farmers to burn their excess wool, she says, noting that wool is 50 per cent biogenic carbon, which is similar to wood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBurning the wool alters the path of the carbon, releasing it from the natural cycle and having it contribute to the atmospheric carbon,\u201d she says. \u201cPelletizing wool keeps that biogenic carbon in the natural system, which is considered carbon neutral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greenhousetechnetwork.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Greenhouse Technology Network (GTN)<\/a>\u00a0is a consortium of research-focused centres that increases innovation capacity to grow the Ontario greenhouse industry.
