{"id":91509,"date":"2024-03-14T13:41:54","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T17:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=91509"},"modified":"2024-10-15T16:32:14","modified_gmt":"2024-10-15T20:32:14","slug":"yosif-al-hasnawi-memorial-lecture-to-highlight-the-art-of-health-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/03\/yosif-al-hasnawi-memorial-lecture-to-highlight-the-art-of-health-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Yosif Al-Hasnawi Memorial Lecture to highlight the art of health justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Editor\u2019s note: This lecture has been rescheduled to Thursday, Oct. 31 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Goodman Atrium.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using the arts to promote health justice is at the heart of the sixth annual Yosif Al-Hasnawi Memorial Lecture: Promoting Racial Justice in Health Care.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by Brock University\u2019s Department of Health Sciences on Friday, March 22, the free, public event will feature Nisha Sajnani, Associate Professor and Director of New York University\u2019s (NYU) Drama Therapy Graduate Program. She is also Chair of the NYU Creative Arts Therapies Consortium and founding co-director of the Jameel Arts and Health Lab, which was established in collaboration with the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p>Sajnani will present a talk entitled \u201cThe Art of Health Justice\u201d from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Her presentation will explore how artistic media, such as visual and digital arts, performance and storytelling, intertwine creativity and advocacy to amplify racialized and otherwise excluded voices, shed light on disparities in health care, and engage communities and decision-makers in addressing systemic inequalities in health-care access and outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtists can be powerful allies in our collective efforts to advance health equity,\u201d says Sajnani. \u201cBy engaging both reason and emotion, the arts can challenge oppressive narratives and engage different audiences in collaborating on a radical reimagining of what is possible and what is just in our interactions with and within health systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The annual Yosif Al-Hasnawi Memorial Lecture helps to memorialize its namesake, <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/gone-but-not-forgotten-bursary-keeps-memory-of-yosif-al-hasnawi-alive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yosif Al-Hasnawi<\/a>, while also encouraging advocacy for justice. On Dec. 2, 2017, the first-year Brock Medical Sciences student was fatally shot while intervening on behalf of a stranger being accosted on the street outside of the mosque in Hamilton where he was volunteering.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s lecture is sponsored by the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences; the President\u2019s Advisory Committee on Human Rights, Equity and Decolonization; the Centre for Women\u2019s and Gender Studies; and the Master of Arts in Social Justice and Equity Studies program.<\/p>\n<p>Registration is not required.
