{"id":91259,"date":"2024-03-01T11:42:48","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T16:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=91259"},"modified":"2024-03-01T17:02:16","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T22:02:16","slug":"brock-to-celebrate-open-education-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/03\/brock-to-celebrate-open-education-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock to celebrate Open Education Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University will join institutions in almost 100 countries in raising awareness of <a href=\"https:\/\/oeweek.oeglobal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Education (OE) Week<\/a> from Monday, March 4 to Friday, March 8.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s Centre for Pedagogical Innovation (CPI) in partnership with the Brock Library are celebrating the innovation taking place to make education more accessible, affordable, inclusive and collaborative by participating in <a href=\"https:\/\/oeweek.oeglobal.org\/activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">global events<\/a>,\u00a0as well as offering a full day of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/pedagogical-innovation\/resources\/open-educational-resources\/oer-showcase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">information sessions<\/a> on Wednesday, March 6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOE is a movement within education that aims to remove barriers and open up education through the use of open education practices and open educational resources (OER),\u201d says Brock Teaching and Learning Librarian Kymberly Ash.<\/p>\n<p>Incorporating open practices into teaching can positively impact students and educators by making course materials more accessible and affordable, and offering more flexibility in course design.<\/p>\n<p>Openly licensed education materials may include books, videos, lesson plans or games that are free to use, share, copy and customize by anyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are committed to eliminating barriers \u2014 legal, economic, technological or any other \u2014 to the creation and dissemination of knowledge,\u201d says Brock\u2019s Vice-Provost of Teaching and Learning, Rajiv Jhangiani, who is also on the board of directors of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/07\/jhangiani-elected-to-board-of-global-open-education-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Education Global<\/a>, a member-based non-profit organization that supports the expansion of open education resources and practices. \u201cOE Week is an opportunity to build a greater understanding of open pedagogy, open educational practices and open resources while celebrating the many instructors at Brock who champion equitable access to education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OE Week sessions being offer to the Brock community include two synchronous online sessions, \u201cOER Foundations: A Starter Kit for Instructors,\u201d geared towards those who are new to OER and would like to learn more about how they could be used in courses and \u201cLeveraging Wikipedia in undergraduate health sciences education as a key tool for information literacy and knowledge translation.\u201d An afternoon session titled, \u201cHow can Open Education support a Trauma-Informed Campus?\u201d will be offered in-person in the CPI Active Learning Classroom in ST103 and online.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/vp-academic\/academic-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic Plan<\/a> pledges to support the creation, adaptation and adoption of OER. As part of this commitment and with the financial support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brockbusu.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock University Students\u2019 Union<\/a>, the Office of the Provost has established an <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/oer\/adoption-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OER Adoption Grant program<\/a>.
