{"id":90620,"date":"2024-01-31T17:04:29","date_gmt":"2024-01-31T22:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=90620"},"modified":"2025-07-10T13:58:48","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T17:58:48","slug":"international-development-week-highlights-brocks-commitment-to-sustainable-development-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/01\/international-development-week-highlights-brocks-commitment-to-sustainable-development-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"International Development Week highlights Brock\u2019s commitment to Sustainable Development Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University will join organizations across Canada to celebrate efforts to eradicate poverty and cultivate a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous world during <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/current\/international-services\/idw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Development Week (IDW)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020, IDW has focused on raising awareness of the 17\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a>, which focus on areas such as quality education, clean water and sanitation, poverty and gender equality. Throughout the week, which runs from Sunday, Feb. 4 to Saturday, Feb. 10, Brock will highlight the SDGs with a range of events for students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>Manager, International Student Supports Koreen McCullough says exposing students to the SDGs is critical to building the awareness they will need as the leaders of tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock\u2019s focus on sustainability dovetails easily with the United Nations\u2019 SDGs and that compatibility is what we are trying to showcase with our own IDW events,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/sustainability\/sdgs_at_brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock\u2019s commitment to creating a sustainable world<\/a> was recognized in 2022 and 2023 when the University was ranked in the Top 300 post-secondary institutions worldwide by the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for its work toward achieving the SDGs.<\/p>\n<p>Departments across the University have co-ordinated a week of online and in-person events to support the Brock community\u2019s understanding of global development and sustainability initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The week kicks off at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 5 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/255312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual information session<\/a> designed to help students, faculty and staff learn more about the SDGs and why they matter. Other IDW events and activities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/256693\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDW Sustainability Competition<\/a> giving participants a chance to win a prize by tracking their sustainable activities for a week.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/254905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gently used winter clothing and housewares<\/a> pick-up for Brock students in need.<\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/254849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SDG storytime<\/a> for kindergarten and preschool aged children to learn about the SDGs through stories, activities and songs.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/256692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A guided tour of Brock\u2019s District Energy System<\/a> giving participants a chance to learn about Brock\u2019s energy system while visiting the cogeneration plant, chiller room, pump room and control room.<\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/255175\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immigration basics information session for faculty and staff<\/a> to learn about when to refer students to Brock International and how immigration law impacts Brock\u2019s international students.<\/li>\n<li>And <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/254289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international handmade marketplace<\/a> featuring custom Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, hand-painted mandala rocks, homemade brown sugar fudge, hand-crafted soap, photographic prints of Niagara landscapes and much more from Brock\u2019s talented English as a Subsequent Language (ESL) students. All proceeds will support <a href=\"https:\/\/plasticbank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Plastic Bank<\/a>, which builds recycling ecosystems in underdeveloped communities in an effort to fight plastic pollution and poverty.<\/li>\n<li>A panel discussion on <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/256864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breaking silos in sustainability <\/a>research designed to help members of the Brock community deepen their SDG, sustainability and social innovation research impact across faculties and disciplines.<\/li>\n<li>A panel discussion on <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/256865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainability and social impact in teaching and professional development<\/a> designed to help members of the Brock community learn about practitioner-focused sustainability and social innovation education initiatives on campus.<\/li>\n<li>A public panel discussion <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/256868\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on promoting SDGs for a livable planet<\/a> that will give attendees insights from World Bank and United Nations leaders on creating a sustainable and equitable world through education, engagement and strategic partnerships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These and other in-person and virtual events will take place throughout the week and are open to all students, staff and faculty.
