{"id":90520,"date":"2024-01-26T13:13:47","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T18:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=90520"},"modified":"2025-05-06T15:14:27","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T19:14:27","slug":"brock-mourns-loss-of-retired-political-science-professor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/01\/brock-mourns-loss-of-retired-political-science-professor\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock mourns loss of retired Political Science professor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Colleagues of retired Associate Professor Terrance Carroll remember a \u201cgenerous,\u201d \u201ckind\u201d and \u201cprofoundly decent\u201d teacher, mentor and friend.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll taught in Brock\u2019s Department of Political Science from 1975 until his retirement in 2012, receiving recognition for <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2010\/12\/staff-honoured-at-holiday-celebration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35 years of service in 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He passed away on Jan. 20 of this year.<\/p>\n<p>While at Brock, Carroll served as a department Chair, and, as part of a long-standing tradition in the Department to speak publicly on political topics for the community, appeared often in panel events to share his expertise and even hosted a weekly interview program on provincial and national politics on a local cable channel in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll was also a long-time supporter of the University and active in the Brock community. He was elected to the University Senate, where he served on the Academic Program Committee, and took on duties with various other University committees, including committees to fill the role of Dean of Social Sciences and University President and, notably, the Planning Steering Committee established in 1988 to develop a mission statement for Brock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerry had an enormous impact on the Brock community,\u201d says Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor of Political Science Paul Hamilton (BA &#8217;90), who first met Carroll as an undergraduate student and remembers him as \u201ca great teacher, researcher, mentor and colleague.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took his third-year comparative politics class, and it changed my life,\u201d Hamilton says. \u201cI wrote a fourth-year thesis under his supervision, and later he encouraged me to go to graduate school.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90526\" style=\"width: 316px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Carroll-group-shot-from-Celebration-Phillips41-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90526\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-90526\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Carroll-group-shot-from-Celebration-Phillips41-1050x788.jpg\" alt=\"Five people stand together.\" width=\"306\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-90526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In 2016, Terry Carroll and Barbara Wake Carroll created a scholarship for full-time graduate students coming to Brock from Africa to study Political Science. From left: Professor Thomas Dunk, Professor Emerita Barbara Wake Carroll (McMaster University), retired Associate Professor Terry Carroll, Professor Hevina Dashwood and Professor Charles Conteh.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Both Hamilton and Chair of Political Science Matthew Hennigar, who joined the department in 2003, note that Carroll was also an active member of the Brock University Faculty Association (BUFA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerry was a pivotal member of the Political Science department and Brock, providing many years of service to both, especially through his work with BUFA,\u201d Hennigar says. \u201cBut my strongest memory of Terry is that he was a wonderful colleague \u2014 fair-minded, even-keeled, funny and just a very decent man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ingrid Makus, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, adds that Carroll was \u201ca wonderful scholar in his field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a dedicated teacher and a very generous and kind colleague who was immensely supportive of students,\u201d she says. \u201cHe was central to the successes of the graduate student program at Brock through scholarships and supervision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Carroll and his wife, Barbara Wake Carroll, established the Carroll Scholarship in Political Science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerry was a profoundly decent person and with his wife, Barbara \u2014 herself a Political Science professor at McMaster \u2014 established a graduate scholarship fund for international students from Africa,\u201d says Hamilton. \u201cIn the years to come, numerous students will benefit from Terry and Barbara&#8217;s generosity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hennigar agrees that the impact of the scholarship is reflective of Carroll\u2019s long-term commitment to all students, and especially international students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerry played a key role in recruiting students from Africa to our graduate program, a relationship we have continued for decades that is aided in no small part by the generous scholarship he and wife Barbara created,\u201d Hennigar says.<\/p>\n<p>Memorial donations can be made in Carroll\u2019s name to the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/05\/the-carroll-scholarship-will-help-students-from-africa-access-ma-in-political-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carroll Political Science Scholarship at Brock University<\/a> or the Helena May Wake Bursary at the University of Manitoba.
