{"id":90244,"date":"2024-01-16T13:09:49","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T18:09:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=90244"},"modified":"2024-01-17T09:49:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T14:49:00","slug":"encryption-espionage-and-the-enigma-machine-at-centre-of-public-brock-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2024\/01\/encryption-espionage-and-the-enigma-machine-at-centre-of-public-brock-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Encryption, espionage and the Enigma machine at centre of public Brock event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>History and technology tie together at an upcoming Brock University event that will discuss the German Enigma encryption device, its role in the Second World War and its impact on modern encryption and computational sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by Brock University\u2019s Faculty of Mathematics and Science in partnership with the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/firstontariopac.ca\/Online\/Article\/EventArticle-2324PAC30-Beyond-the-Imitation-Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond the Imitation Game: From Dieppe and James Bond to Blackberry and Quantum Encryption<\/a>\u201d will feature Enigma and cryptology artifacts as well as discussions about the significance of the Enigma \u2014 and of the Allies breaking its code \u2014 on world and Canadian history, along with its impact on modern espionage and encryption technology.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90249\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90249\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-90249\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Peter-Berg-cropped-785x1050.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Peter Berg\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-90249\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter Berg, computational physicist and Dean of Brock University\u2019s Faculty of Mathematics of Science.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMore than any other encryption device, it was the German Enigma machine that embodied the unleashing of a covert war between rival intelligence services and capabilities, and it was the breaking of the Enigma code that gave the Allies a critical edge over the Nazis,\u201d says Peter Berg, a computational physicist and Dean for Brock University\u2019s Faculty of Mathematics of Science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Enigma was arguably the first serious, semi-automated encryption device to be employed on a large scale. Its functionality, flaws in operation, vulnerabilities and associated codebreaking methodologies spurred advancements in computing and shaped the development of modern encryption technologies and algorithms,\u201d he says. \u201cPhysicists are now trying to move beyond conventional encryption and utilize quantum mechanics to generate more secure communication channels, even via satellites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berg is one of three guests speaking at the event set to take place Friday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) in St. Catharines. <a href=\"https:\/\/firstontariopac.ca\/Online\/Article\/EventArticle-2324PAC30-Beyond-the-Imitation-Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tickets<\/a> are pay-what-you-can, with a suggested price of $20.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Berg on stage will be Richard Brisson, a mathematician and collector of cryptology artifacts, who will be showcasing the rare Enigma machine, and Thomas Jennewein, Associate Professor for the University of Waterloo\u2019s Institute for Quantum Computing and Department of Physics and Astronomy, who will discuss the Enigma&#8217;s impact on modern technology, such as space-based quantum communication technology.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90247\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90247\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-90247\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Richard-Brisson-cropped-785x1050.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Richard Brisson\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-90247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Brisson, mathematician and collector of cryptology artifacts.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The community engagement event is one of several in which Brock University has partnered closely with the PAC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FirstOntario PAC thrives on our partnership with Brock University, and we enthusiastically welcome collaborations with multiple departments annually,\u201d says Sara Palmieri, Director of Programming and Marketing at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. \u201cWe are thrilled to collaborate with the Faculty of Mathematics and Science on this fascinating program to help deepen understanding and appreciation of this important piece of our history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Complementing the \u201cBeyond the Imitation Game\u201d event at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre will be free academic lectures by Brisson and <span class=\"ui-provider a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z ab ac ae af ag ah ai aj ak\" dir=\"ltr\">Jennewein<\/span> at Brock University.<\/p>\n<p>Brisson will present <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/253871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cryptologic History and Canada<\/a> on Friday, Jan. 26 from 1 to 2 p.m. in Rankin Family Pavilion room RFP 214\/215 as part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Seminar Series.
