{"id":88790,"date":"2023-10-19T10:55:40","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T14:55:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=88790"},"modified":"2023-10-19T16:16:30","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T20:16:30","slug":"bufs-season-continues-with-acclaimed-talking-heads-concert-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/10\/bufs-season-continues-with-acclaimed-talking-heads-concert-film\/","title":{"rendered":"BUFS season continues with acclaimed Talking Heads concert film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock University Film Society (BUFS) season continues Sunday, Oct. 22 with a screening of the 40th anniversary 4K re-release of Jonathan Demme\u2019s <em>Stop Making Sense<\/em>, which immortalized Talking Heads concerts from the 1983 Speaking in Tongues tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA talented and aspiring director teamed up with the band at the peak of their powers and the height of their artistic ambitions,\u201d says Associate Professor Anthony Kinik in the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film. \u201cTogether, Demme and David Byrne, the band\u2019s singer, lyricist and resident performance artist, deconstructed the concert film, stripping it of its clich\u00e9s and excesses, and then reconstructed it as something both mysterious and mesmerizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Demme went on to make several acclaimed independent and blockbuster films, including <em>Married to the Mob<\/em>, <em>The Silence of the Lambs<\/em> and <em>Philadelphia<\/em>. He also continued to make music videos for the likes of New Order and Bruce Springsteen and to make rockumentaries \u2014 notably, Neil Young\u2019s <em>Heart of Gold<\/em> and <em>Trunk Show<\/em> \u2014 throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p><em>Stop Making Sense<\/em> screens Sunday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Film House in downtown St. Catharines. Tickets for all screenings are available at the Film House.
