{"id":88531,"date":"2023-10-11T12:04:23","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T16:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=88531"},"modified":"2023-10-11T16:14:55","modified_gmt":"2023-10-11T20:14:55","slug":"brock-science-profs-to-discuss-nobel-prizes-at-free-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/10\/brock-science-profs-to-discuss-nobel-prizes-at-free-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock science profs to discuss Nobel Prizes at free event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Brock community are invited to a lunchtime event discussing recent Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics and medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/243814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobel Prize Learn at Lunch<\/a> will feature four 15-minute talks from Brock researchers who will break down the complex scientific concepts behind the ground-breaking research and highlight potential applications that could revolutionize the future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professor of Chemistry Georgii Nikonov will discuss the history and significance of the Nobel Prizes.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor of Chemistry Jianbo Gao will speak about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2023\/summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry<\/a> awarded to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov for the discovery and development of quantum dots.<\/li>\n<li>Professor of Physics Thad Harroun will discuss the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/physics\/2023\/summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Nobel Prize in Physics<\/a> awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L\u2019Huillier for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Ian Patterson will talk about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/medicine\/2023\/summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine<\/a> awarded to Katalin Karik\u00f3 and Drew Weissman for their discoveries concerning base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Nobel Prize Learn at Lunch event takes place Tuesday, Oct. 17 from noon to 1 p.m. in Pond Inlet. All Brock faculty, students and staff are invited to attend.
