{"id":88151,"date":"2023-09-22T14:58:54","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T18:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=88151"},"modified":"2023-09-22T15:39:00","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T19:39:00","slug":"book-wrapping-events-to-remember-missing-and-murdered-indigenous-women-girls-and-two-spirit-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/09\/book-wrapping-events-to-remember-missing-and-murdered-indigenous-women-girls-and-two-spirit-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Book-wrapping events to remember missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An upcoming initiative at the Brock Library is set to honour\u00a0missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S+).<\/p>\n<p>During the next two weeks, three drop-in events will welcome all members of the Brock community to take part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanadianlibrary.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Canadian Library<\/a>, a grassroots art installation project that acts as a memorial to all MMIWG2S+.<\/p>\n<p>Taking place at Brock and locations across the country, the goal of the project is to wrap 8,000 books in fabric prints that reflect First Nations, M\u00e9tis and Inuit designs as a testament to the lives lost. Before each book is placed on the gallery bookshelf in the library, the name of one of the MMIWG2S+ is written in gold along its spine.<\/p>\n<p>Drop-in gatherings to wrap books at Brock will take place Monday, Sept. 25 from 2:30 to 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29 from 1:30 to 4 p.m., and Monday, Oct. 2 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and are open to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Robyn Bourgeois, Brock\u2019s Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement, said the project shows that anyone can raise awareness about MMIWG2S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the Canadian Library Project because it demonstrates that any group can find its unique way to contribute to this movement for justice,\u201d she said. \u201cWe cannot let the women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people stolen from our communities be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Thiessen, Brock Library\u2019s Head of Teaching and Learning, discovered The Canadian Library while participating in a community event\u00a0hosted by\u00a0the Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre and\u00a0the Lincoln Pelham Public Library, where she also met\u00a0Shanta Sundarason, founder of\u00a0the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was struck by\u00a0the\u00a0tangible way\u00a0this activity allowed me and my family\u00a0to remember and honour MMIWG2S+,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cThe act\u00a0of affixing an individual\u2019s name on a fabric-wrapped book helped us consider\u00a0the\u00a0terrible and unjust\u00a0loss of so many Indigenous women and girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After speaking to Sundarason about the inspiration behind the project and her desire to build further awareness, Thiessen successfully undertook the steps needed to bring The Canadian Library to Brock, which has led to a goal of wrapping more than 75 books by Oct. 4 to be displayed on the main floor of the James A.
