{"id":88099,"date":"2023-09-22T11:15:23","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T15:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=88099"},"modified":"2023-09-22T15:37:45","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T19:37:45","slug":"local-educator-recognized-for-decades-of-volunteer-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/09\/local-educator-recognized-for-decades-of-volunteer-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Local educator recognized for decades of volunteer service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Offering a helping hand to someone in need is second nature for Vince Anania (BA \u201985, BEd \u201986).<\/p>\n<p>The two-time Brock graduate and educator of nearly 38 years has been a dedicated volunteer within the Brock University community since he first stepped on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Four decades later, Anania received the Brock University Alumni Association\u2019s (BUAA) 2023 David S. Betzner Award on Saturday, Sept. 16 in recognition of his continuous Brock volunteer service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Brock University, we\u2019re extremely fortunate to have such a supportive and engaged community of graduates who are eager to give back, whether it be through their time, talent or other means like financial contributions,\u201d says BUAA President Chris Ventura.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_88104\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/DSC06616-Vince-Anania-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88104\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-88104\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/DSC06616-Vince-Anania-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"Three people pose side-by-side in front of a red wall. Betzner Award recipient Vince Anania (BA \u201985, BEd \u201986) and Brock University Alumni Association President Chris Ventura (BA \u201912, MEd \u201917) at Brock\u2019s Alumni Recognition Reception on Saturday, Sept. 16.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAlumni are the result of Brock\u2019s exceptional academic and student experience \u2014 experiences that wouldn\u2019t be possible without dedicated volunteers like Vince.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his undergraduate studies, Anania seized countless opportunities to get involved in university life, helping the Brock University Students\u2019 Union organize events across campus, including concerts, Homecoming events and events for the former College of Education, now known as the Faculty of Education.<\/p>\n<p>Even as a graduate, Anania has answered the call to support Brock initiatives like Convocation and Smart Start. He has also hosted presentations for students on various topics including work-life balance, exploring careers in the education sector and providing mentorship to Brock teacher candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Anania believes it\u2019s his duty to help in these ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I didn\u2019t get the opportunity to attend Brock for my undergraduate degrees, I wouldn\u2019t be where I am today,\u201d says Anania. \u201cIt\u2019s vital to give back to ensure our school continues to excel and create positive members of society. Today\u2019s students are our future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anania currently teaches physical education and health to five kindergarten classes at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School in Niagara.
