When fourth-year Interactive Arts and Science student Samantha Savage entered the General Brock (GB) Mural Competition<\/a>, she hoped to grow her portfolio. But creating the new piece of art turned into a vibrant contribution to the Brock community.<\/p>\n

Held during the summer renovation of the GB caf\u00e9 and convenience store, the Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) mural competition attracted the attention of student artists from across campus who showcased their mural design skills.<\/p>\n

The goal was to reflect community and equality at Brock. Savage embraced this goal in her design by including different aspects of the University and GB that bring students together, with the new mural capturing the student caf\u00e9\u2019s culture and providing a colourful photo opportunity for students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether a student comes to GB for their smoothies, coffee, snacks, to study or for a fun space to hang out with friends, they can see their experience represented in the mural,\u201d said Savage.<\/p>\n

The St. Catharines resident has specialized in digital expression during her studies at Brock, allowing her to learn graphic design, videography, website design and 3D modelling, and to take many other classes that helped to develop her creative thinking.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have always been passionate about art and design, and I enjoy painting and doing other visual arts as a hobby,\u201d she said. \u201cWith this mural project, I hoped to continue to grow my creative skills and add a new physical art piece to my design portfolio.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Brock community can enjoy Savage\u2019s winning mural at the freshly renovated GB. This student-run social enterprise is part of BUSU and now includes Badger\u2019s Caf\u00e9 & Lounge, Booster Juice, GB Convenience Store and Grab \u2018N\u2019 Go meals.<\/p>\n
