{"id":87567,"date":"2023-08-30T14:32:47","date_gmt":"2023-08-30T18:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=87567"},"modified":"2023-08-30T16:23:18","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T20:23:18","slug":"anthropocene-research-among-brock-projects-to-receive-965000-in-sshrc-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/08\/anthropocene-research-among-brock-projects-to-receive-965000-in-sshrc-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthropocene research among Brock projects to receive $965,000 in SSHRC funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s being called the \u201cbomb pulse,\u201d the sharp spike of carbon-14 in the Earth\u2019s atmosphere arising out of fallout from nuclear bomb testing in the 1950s and \u201960s.<\/p>\n<p>This fallout has changed the Earth so much that the international geologic community is poised to formally declare a new epoch in Earth\u2019s history, the Anthropocene.<\/p>\n<p>Through their work, Brock University Professor of Philosophy Christine Daigle and her team are taking scientific evidence found in <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/and\/crawford-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock-led geologic research<\/a> to the next level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does the Anthropocene teach us about ourselves and the various entangled temporalities of past, present and future humans and non-humans?\u201d says Daigle, Director of Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/pri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Posthumanism Research Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Daigle is among seven Brock researchers awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/funding-financement\/programs-programmes\/insight_grants-subventions_savoir-eng.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insight Grants<\/a> from the federal government\u2019s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), announced Tuesday, Aug. 29 by Canada\u2019s Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages Randy Boissonnault, on behalf of Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and Mark Holland, Minister of Health.<\/p>\n<p>Brock received $965,636 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/funding-financement\/programs-programmes\/insight_grants-subventions_savoir-eng.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insight Grant funding<\/a>, which supports research excellence and sees projects judged worthy of funding by fellow researchers and\/or other experts. The research can be conducted individually or by teams.<\/p>\n<p>Also included in the Aug. 29 announcement was other federal government funding for Brock, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/08\/brock-co-led-team-awarded-2-5m-for-project-giving-minoritized-voices-centre-stage-in-transforming-theatre-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a $2.5-million SSHRC Partnership Grant<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the renewal of Associate Professor of Psychology Karen Campbell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca\/chairholders-titulaires\/profile-eng.aspx?profileId=3617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience of Aging<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/08\/brock-awarded-4-8-million-in-national-science-research-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$4.8 million in funding<\/a> from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council\u2019s Discover\/Explore program<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/08\/federal-funding-supports-brock-infrastructure-in-mobility-insect-and-health-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$295,000 for research infrastructure<\/a> under the Canada Foundation for Innovation\u2019s John R. Evans Leaders Fund<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe wide range of research funded through these competitive awards shares something important,\u201d says Brock Vice-President, Research Tim Kenyon. \u201cIt reflects expert engagement with the critical issues of our community, country and world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daigle\u2019s project, \u201cBomb Pulse: Cultural and Philosophical Readings of Time Signatures in the Anthropocene,\u201d focuses on interpreting layers of sediment in Halton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/01\/conserving-sensitive-environments-can-yield-clues-about-earths-history-says-brock-prof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crawford Lake<\/a> collected by Brock Professor of Earth Sciences Francine McCarthy and her team.<\/p>\n<p>The sediment layers contain evidence of a wide range of recent human activity, including nuclear fallout, fertilizers, fly ash, plastics and greenhouse gases.
