{"id":8714,"date":"2011-03-14T01:10:19","date_gmt":"2011-03-14T06:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=8714"},"modified":"2011-03-14T10:47:33","modified_gmt":"2011-03-14T15:47:33","slug":"university-reaches-tentative-deal-with-cupe-4207-unit-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/03\/university-reaches-tentative-deal-with-cupe-4207-unit-1\/","title":{"rendered":"University reaches tentative deal with CUPE 4207 (Unit 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University and CUPE 4207 (Unit 1) reached a tentative agreement early Monday morning March 14, nearly two hours after the union\u2019s strike deadline, and averting what would have been the first strike in the history of the University.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the deal, classes and University services will function as usual on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Working through the weekend with the help of a provincially-appointed mediator, negotiators from the University and the union \u2014 which represents more than 800 teaching assistants, course co-ordinators, lab demonstrators and marker-graders \u2014 arrived at the deal shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Details will not be released until the tentative agreement has been ratified by the parties.<\/p>\n<p>A strike would have come with just a few weeks left in the academic term, and would have made it a challenge for students to write final exams, vacate rented apartments and get away in time to begin summer jobs.<\/p>\n<p>University President Jack Lightstone called the breakthrough \u201cfantastic news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely relieved that a tentative agreement has been reached,\u201d said Lightstone. \u201cThis is a victory for everyone.
