{"id":86421,"date":"2023-06-16T08:00:31","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T12:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=86421"},"modified":"2023-06-16T15:46:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T19:46:42","slug":"neuroscience-grad-grateful-for-well-rounded-brock-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/06\/neuroscience-grad-grateful-for-well-rounded-brock-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Neuroscience grad grateful for well-rounded Brock experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A familiar face to many on campus, Ryanne Logan (BSc \u201923) has taken advantage of everything Brock has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>The dedicated volunteer, researcher and varsity athlete, Logan graduated on Friday, June 16 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience during Brock\u2019s 113th Convocation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAltogether, I am amazed at the opportunities that I was presented with at Brock throughout my time as an undergraduate student,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Logan, who is Lenape and from Delaware Nation near Chatham-Kent, is the first member of her immediate family to graduate from university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother and brother have been my rock and core support system throughout my academic career,\u201d she says. \u201cMy family is incredibly supportive and proud of my accomplishments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Logan says she worked closely with the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/tag\/hadiyadagenhahs-first-nations-metis-and-inuit-student-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hadiya\u2019dag\u00e9nhahs First Nations M\u00e9tis and Inuit Student Centre<\/a>, describing the centre as \u201cinstrumental in guiding and supporting Indigenous students at Brock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her impressive academic record led to opportunities to work as a research assistant with Department of Educational Studies and the Department of Health Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d have to say the personal highlight of my degree has been the initial research project I participated in,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Logan <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/11\/applied-health-sciences-event-explores-ways-to-contribute-to-campus-decolonization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worked with a research team<\/a>, which included four other Indigenous and non-Indigenous Brock students, between fall 2020 and fall 2021 on a participatory action research project titled, \u201cDecolonization, Transformative Learning Experiences, and Brock University: Challenging Assumptions that \u2018this is the way it has to be.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In February, the five students led a discussion about decolonization and experiential learning at the Canada-Caribbean Institute\u2019s (CCI) second annual research symposium held at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Barbados.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Logan began working on a virtual reality and Indigenous language revitalization project, \u201cSh\u0119h nidwa:g\u0119hs: The potential of virtual reality technology in revitalization and learning of the Cayuga language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cayuga, an Iroquoian language local to Brock, is spoken mainly along the Grand River in southern Ontario. Just 65 people listed Cayuga as their mother tongue in the\u00a02021 census.<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to bring together people from around the world to meet in a virtual environment to learn and support the revitalization of the language.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the classroom, Logan has been an active member of the Brock women\u2019s lacrosse team, serving as varsity co-captain and being named the team\u2019s Most Valuable Badger at the 2022-23 Brock Badgers Awards Gala\u00a0in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing on a varsity team definitely contributed to my confidence both in academia and personally, and having the opportunity to be a leader and captain on the team in my second year playing is a feature of my degree that I will never forget,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her busy academic and athletic schedule, Logan has made it a priority to give back to others by working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundraise.globalbrigades.org\/empowered\/chapter\/brock-university-medical-brigades-chapter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock University chapter of Global Medical Brigades<\/a>, which works with local communities in Panama and Honduras to implement sustainable health-care systems.<\/p>\n<p>Logan will be specializing in community health when she returns to Brock this fall to begin the Master of Arts in Applied Health Sciences program.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, she says she can\u2019t picture herself anywhere else but Brock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose Brock back in high school based on the campus and my program, but after five years here, I am excited to continue and expand my studies within this community and to continue to see what opportunities become available to me,\u201d she says. \u201cHad I not been presented with the welcoming, accepting faculty and students that took me under their wing to develop me as a student, person and researcher, I have no clue where I\u2019d be right now as I finish my undergraduate degree.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A familiar face to many on campus, Ryanne Logan (BSc \u201923) has taken advantage of everything Brock has to offer. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":57,"featured_media":86422,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[119,188,55,6833,41,1,58],"tags":[156,348,12040,4226,614,10436,1759,12738],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/86421"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/57"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=86421"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/86421\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":86425,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/86421\/revisions\/86425"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/86422"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=86421"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=86421"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=86421"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
