Brock University marked European Union Day on Tuesday, May 9 by welcoming a delegation of 18 Consuls General to campus.<\/p>\n
As part of an EU Day celebration organized by Niagara Region Economic Development, the University hosted a reception for the group before taking EU representatives on a tour of Brock\u2019s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI).<\/p>\n
Observed annually on May 9, European Union Day marks the historic signing of the Schuman Declaration and symbolizes peace and unity in Europe, upholding the union\u2019s motto \u2013 \u201cUnited in Diversity.\u201d Each year, the EU holds events across its member states in celebration.<\/p>\n
During Tuesday\u2019s reception on campus, the European Union Consuls General in Toronto announced a one-time $2,000 grant that will be awarded to a Brock University student participating in the Student Exchange Program at a partner institution in the EU.<\/p>\n
The grant serves as evidence of the strong partnerships and collaborations that exist between the regions and the shared commitment of cultivating academic excellence and cultural exchange \u2014 a focal point of the University\u2019s efforts towards internationalization.<\/p>\n
\u201cBrock is committed to offering globally engaged learning and experience opportunities for students and faculty, made possible through the University\u2019s established and growing international connections,\u201d said Lynns Wells, Provost and Vice-President, Academic. \u201cWe were honoured to welcome the European Union delegation to campus and look forward to potential future collaborations as Brock continues to extend its global reach.\u201d<\/p>\n
After touring CCOVI, the delegation attended a flag-raising ceremony at International Plaza of Niagara Region Headquarters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis visit underscores the importance of our relationship with the European Union and the shared values that bind us together,\u201d said Niagara Region Chair Jim Bradley. \u201cPartnerships like these are crucial for the growth of our economy, and I look forward to seeing the benefits this collaboration will bring to our region.”<\/p>\n
On behalf of the European Union Consuls General, Lars Henriksson, Honorary Consul General of Sweden, said the group was delighted to celebrate in Niagara, reflecting on the many cultural, economic, academic and political ties between the region and the EU, and the opportunity European Union Day provides to further develop those connections.<\/p>\n
Following the flag-raising ceremony, the delegation continued learning about Niagara\u2019s rich heritage with a visit to the Niagara Parks Power Station \u2014 Canada\u2019s first major power plant, which is now a destination for visitors to the region to experience immersive exhibits, view artifacts and learn the building and area history.<\/p>\n
The visit concluded with a reception that provided a valuable opportunity for dignitaries and members of Niagara’s business community to network and engage in discussions surrounding trade and market prospects in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\t
