{"id":85424,"date":"2023-05-09T12:45:29","date_gmt":"2023-05-09T16:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=85424"},"modified":"2023-05-09T16:35:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T20:35:00","slug":"audio-tour-explores-historic-art-of-mackenzie-chown-complex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/05\/audio-tour-explores-historic-art-of-mackenzie-chown-complex\/","title":{"rendered":"Audio tour explores historic art of Mackenzie Chown Complex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Getting lost in Mackenzie Chown Complex is a familiar experience for many Brock students, and it\u2019s easy to miss the artistic significance of the building in the rush to get to class on time.<\/p>\n<p>A new self-guided audio tour produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/humanities\/foreword\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Foreword<\/em><\/a>, a podcast from the Faculty of Humanities, hopes to encourage a new appreciation for a complicated space and the art it contains on the 50th anniversary of its installation.<\/p>\n<p>The audio tour guides the listener through the various locations of Michael Snow\u2019s 1972-73 art installation <em>Time Images<\/em> and considers how the building\u2019s unique architecture plays with the space and light.<\/p>\n<p>Snow was invited by renowned architect Raymond Moriyama to create an art installation as part of the design for Brock\u2019s new Academic Staging Building, now called the Mackenzie Chown Complex. His installation consisted of a series of mirrors, still images and live video situated throughout the building from Pond Inlet to A Block.<\/p>\n<p>Elements of the installation can still be seen, and the audio tour has an <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/humanities\/foreword\/snow-walk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accompanying web page<\/a> featuring historic photographs, artist sketches and architectural plans collected by Lesley Bell (BA \u201988), an artist and retired support staff for Brock\u2019s Department of Visual Arts, during her research on Snow.<\/p>\n<p>Snow, who <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/01\/acclaimed-artist-michael-snow-remembered-with-campus-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">died in January<\/a>, was a widely acclaimed Canadian artist. His many honours included Officer of the Order of Canada (1981), Governor General\u2019s Award in Media Arts (2000) and an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Brock University (1974). He is also known for his Canada geese sculpture, <em>Flight Stop<\/em> (1979), that hangs in Toronto\u2019s Eaton Centre and his piece <em>The<\/em> <em>Audience<\/em> (1989) on the exterior of the Rogers Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Foreword<\/em> podcast&#8217;s two-part final episode of series four also features an <a href=\"https:\/\/foreword.podbean.com\/e\/s4e09-getting-lost-in-mackenzie-chown-complex-with-lesley-bell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview with Bell<\/a> by host Alison Innes, Strategic Initiatives and Outreach Officer in the Faculty of Humanities. Bell became interested in Snow\u2019s art at Brock while she was working with the Department of Visual Arts.
