{"id":85285,"date":"2023-05-01T14:32:05","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T18:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=85285"},"modified":"2023-05-01T16:08:57","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T20:08:57","slug":"brock-business-professor-named-3m-national-teaching-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/05\/brock-business-professor-named-3m-national-teaching-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock Business professor named 3M National Teaching Fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University Marketing Professor Kai-Yu Wang has been awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/education\/teaching-fellowship-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2023 3M National Teaching Fellowship<\/a>. With only 10 given out nation-wide each year, the award is considered one of Canada\u2019s most prestigious post-secondary teaching excellence awards.<\/p>\n<p>Wang, who is also Chair of the Marketing, International Business and Strategy Department in the Goodman School of Business, says it feels unreal to receive recognition for the extremely competitive award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel incredibly honoured to be selected as a National Teaching Fellow,\u201d Wang says. \u201cThis award means a lot to me personally and I hope it can encourage my colleagues in business in their own teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fellowship is sponsored by both 3M Canada and the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and honours exceptional contributions to teaching, learning and leadership at the post-secondary level.<\/p>\n<p>The national recognition, of which Wang is the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/pedagogical-innovation\/awards-grants\/3m-fellows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">13th Brock recipient<\/a>, speaks to the high calibre of teaching excellence taking place at the University, says President and Vice-Chancellor Lesley Rigg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock\u2019s passionate and innovative educators are among the best in the country, and their commitment to student success is second to none,\u201d she says. \u201cThe University\u2019s focus on providing a transformational and accessible academic experience for all learners is made possible by outstanding academics, such as Dr. Wang, who make a difference in and beyond the classroom every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EcIV-Xwf9iE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Wang\u2019s efforts in the classroom and contributions to his field have seen him recognized with several honours in recent years: the 2020 Brock University Award for Distinguished Teaching, the 2021 Goodman Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2022 Society for Marketing Advances Distinguished Teaching Award. He was also named Goodman\u2019s Distinguished Researcher for 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Goodman Dean Barry Wright says it\u2019s this combined excellence in both teaching and research that provides added value for Wang\u2019s students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Wang\u2019s commitment to being a leading researcher in a rapidly evolving field like digital marketing helps him stay innovative in designing courses and activities for his students,\u201d he says. \u201cCollectively, everyone in Goodman is immensely proud of him for this well-deserved recognition. He is the first from our business school to receive this award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wang says he wants students to leave his classroom with skills they are going to need in their profession. He\u2019s been recognized for being a leader in experiential education, bringing in community partner organizations to work directly with his students to develop and execute digital marketing campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Wang is a true champion of experiential education,\u201d says Rajiv Jhangiani, Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning. \u201cIn addition to connecting classroom learning with real-world practice, he is dedicated to designing inclusive and supportive learning environments, working to continually evolve his own teaching practices while inspiring others to do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The award\u2019s evaluation committee also noted Wang\u2019s educational leadership in using his experiential learning activities to develop a modern digital marking professional development course that addresses the needs of today\u2019s businesses.
