{"id":85000,"date":"2023-04-19T13:34:11","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T17:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=85000"},"modified":"2023-04-20T13:50:49","modified_gmt":"2023-04-20T17:50:49","slug":"brock-mourns-passing-of-retired-longtime-staff-member","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/04\/brock-mourns-passing-of-retired-longtime-staff-member\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock mourns passing of retired longtime staff member"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Barclay was extremely proud of his 52-year tenure at Brock University.<\/p>\n<p>He spent five decades as Senior Storekeeper in what is now the Earth Sciences Department, and <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/brock-storekeeper-retiring-after-50-years-of-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the time of his 2018 retirement<\/a>, was recognized as the University\u2019s then longest-serving, ongoing employee.<\/p>\n<p>Barclay passed away Saturday, April 15 at the age of 76.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPete may have officially been a member of the Earth Sciences Department, but he will always be remembered as a colleague and friend of the Faculty of Math and Sciences (FMS) Technical Services Shops,\u201d says Thomas MacDonald, FMS Manager Technical Services \u2013 Electronics. \u201cPete worked as our Technical Shops accounts bookkeeper for many of his 50-plus years at Brock. He would join us every day at the Electronics Shop for coffee break where he would often talk about sports and corvettes, his favourite passions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Engaged in the social aspects of his role, Barclay never missed a \u201cTechnical Shops Christmas Lunch\u201d and often took the lead on inviting past staff and retirees back to campus for visits. He was also a member of Ontario Secondary School Teachers&#8217; Federation throughout his Brock career.<\/p>\n<p>But what MacDonald remembers most about Barclay were their lunchtime walks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPete and I walked thousands of kilometres both inside and around the campus over many years at Brock,\u201d says MacDonald. \u201cI was always amazed at the number of fellow colleagues we would stop and chat with. He truly knew the Brock community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who knew him well saw Barclay as a Brock historian for his stories about working at the University\u2019s original campus on Lockhart Drive at the bottom of the Glenridge hill.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Fueten, Chair of the Department of Earth Sciences and Barclay\u2019s last manager, agrees that an under-acknowledged aspect of more than 50 years of service is the retention of departmental and institutional memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany conversations with him started with \u2018Pete, do you recall\u2026.,\u2019\u201d Fueten remembers fondly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter was absolutely an integral part of the Earth Sciences Department and the Faculty of Mathematics and Science,\u201d says Fueten. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until soon after he retired that we began to discover how much we relied on Pete\u2019s presence as the answer to many of our daily problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following his retirement Barclay continued to stay in regular contact with individuals within the Technical Services team, Earth Sciences Department and Brock community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many who will truly miss their special colleague and friend,\u201d says MacDonald.<\/p>\n<p>During Barclay\u2019s final days at Niagara Health\u2019s St. Catharines Site, his connection to Brock continued, with the University\u2019s Nursing students part of his health-care team.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arbormemorial.ca\/pleasantview\/obituaries\/peter-barclay\/102383\">Celebration of Life<\/a> will be held Friday, April 21 at 6 p.m. at the Pleasantview Funeral Home at 2000 Merrittville Hwy., Fonthill.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s flags will be lowered to half-mast on the same day in Barclay\u2019s honour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Barclay was extremely proud of his 52-year tenure at Brock University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29,"featured_media":85001,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[41,1,4],"tags":[885,348,3400,7281,12602],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/85000"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/29"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=85000"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/85000\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":85050,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/85000\/revisions\/85050"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/85001"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=85000"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=85000"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=85000"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
