{"id":84888,"date":"2023-04-13T11:01:34","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T15:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=84888"},"modified":"2023-04-17T17:25:40","modified_gmt":"2023-04-17T21:25:40","slug":"grad-student-research-to-take-spotlight-at-3mt-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/04\/grad-student-research-to-take-spotlight-at-3mt-finals\/","title":{"rendered":"Grad student research to take spotlight at 3MT finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With only three minutes each at their disposal, seven Brock University graduate students will pitch their research Monday, April 17 in hopes of captivating both the judges and the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Finalists in the University\u2019s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition will vie for the $1,000 prize and a spot representing Brock and Niagara in the provincial finals May 17 at Queen\u2019s University.<\/p>\n<p>The competition, which originated in Queensland, Australia, in 2008, encourages students to sharpen their knowledge mobilization skills, explaining their research to a broad audience in plain, accessible terms. Presenters have three minutes and a single slide image to summarize their research.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen contestants competed in Brock\u2019s first round in March, with internal judges choosing the top students to move on to Monday\u2019s finals.<\/p>\n<p>The seven 3MT finalists include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Madiha Ahmed, Mathematics and Statistics, \u201cArtificial Intelligence based model for Novel Multi-target drug design\u201d \u200b<\/li>\n<li>Zoe Gagnon, Biological Sciences, \u201cExamining the role of Sema3A in hippocampal spatial memory\u00a0formation in the adult mouse\u200b\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Karl Grantham, Computer Science, \u201cAI Enabled Drug Design and Side Effect Prediction Powered by\u00a0Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms and Transformer\u00a0Models\u201d\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Ben Johnson, Child and Youth Studies, \u201cPursuing Universal Design for Learning in Reading Remediation:\u00a0Investigating How Executive\u00a0\u200bFunctioning Predicts Success\u200b\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Mourin Mostafiz, Management, \u201cResponding to organizational crisis: The role of message\u00a0framing and information processing system\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Alex Popescu, Biological Sciences, with \u201cHeads up! Social vigilance behaviour in American crows\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Alex Wilder, Biological Sciences, \u201cSmell you later: Understanding the role of olfactory signals in\u00a0African penguin communication\u200b\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 3MT finals external judge panel will evaluate students on communication, comprehension and engagement.<\/p>\n<p>The panel consists of respected and influential members of Niagara who bring a valuable and diverse lens to the competition. Judges include Dr. M.
