{"id":84857,"date":"2023-04-12T12:51:26","date_gmt":"2023-04-12T16:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=84857"},"modified":"2023-04-12T22:35:18","modified_gmt":"2023-04-13T02:35:18","slug":"brock-mental-health-week-returns-with-employee-wellness-sessions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/04\/brock-mental-health-week-returns-with-employee-wellness-sessions\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock Mental Health Week returns with employee wellness sessions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With mental health top of mind, Brock University is planning a week filled with employee activities that promote relaxation and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s Health Management and Wellness team, in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), invites employees to participate in Mental Health Week from Monday, May 1 to Friday, May 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe planned activities include both in-person and virtual offerings,\u201d says Martina Ciglenecki, Manager, Health Management and Wellness. \u201cThe past three years were comprised exclusively of virtual offerings. We are very excited to offer a hybrid model of activities for our eighth annual Mental Health Week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/human-resources\/Shared%20Documents\/Forms\/AllItems.aspx?id=%2Fhuman%2Dresources%2FShared%20Documents%2FEHS%2FWellness%20calendar%2F2023%2D%20MHW%2Epdf&amp;parent=%2Fhuman%2Dresources%2FShared%20Documents%2FEHS%2FWellness%20calendar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weeklong schedule<\/a> of lunchtime events is intended to promote relaxation and resilience while also working to eliminate the stigma of mental illness in a workplace setting.<\/p>\n<p>Mental Health Week kicks off with the return of the <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/234867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PAWS Room by Therapeutic Paws of Canada<\/a>. Employees can reduce stress by interacting with therapy dog teams on Monday, May 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Pond Inlet.<\/p>\n<p>A virtual Resiliency at Work seminar on Tuesday, May 2 will provide participants with an understanding of the different components that contribute to resiliency and show them how they can thrive under pressure. The instructor-led training session with TELUS Health takes place from noon to 1 p.m. on Zoom. Participants are asked to register in advance through <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/234861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ExperienceBU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s event includes the return of the barbecue luncheon on Wednesday, May 3 at noon in Jubilee Court. Hosted by Aramark, a portion of the proceeds of each $13-ticket sold will be donated to the CMHA \u2013 Niagara branch. Employees must RSVP through <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/234869\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ExperienceBU<\/a> before 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, and payment will be made in cash at the event.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock community is also encouraged to wear green Wednesday, May 3 in recognition of Mental Health Week and Brock\u2019s Schmon Tower will be illuminated in green the same evening in support of mental health awareness.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, May 4, John Dick, Brock\u2019s Manager, Grounds Services, is leading a lunchtime walk to explore lesser-known plants found on campus for aspiring and avid gardeners. Participants will receive the meeting location after <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/234865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">registering on ExperienceBU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The week wraps up with virtual training from <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/234863\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Working Mind<\/a> on Friday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The education-based program is designed to address and promote mental health and reduce the stigma of mental illness in a workplace setting. Those who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion from the Mental Health Commission of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to attending events throughout the week, employees are encouraged to share random acts of kindness notes on the chalkboard wall across from the Brock Card office in Thistle Complex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe theme of this year\u2019s CMHA Mental Health week is \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthweek.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My Story<\/a>,\u2019\u201d says Ciglenecki. \u201cWe all have stories of what we\u2019ve experienced and those we have helped.
