{"id":84699,"date":"2023-04-04T11:01:56","date_gmt":"2023-04-04T15:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=84699"},"modified":"2023-04-05T15:09:55","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T19:09:55","slug":"women-in-leadership-event-to-look-at-mitigating-masculine-defaults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/04\/women-in-leadership-event-to-look-at-mitigating-masculine-defaults\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in Leadership event to look at mitigating \u2018masculine defaults\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>EDITOR&#8217;S NOTE: This event has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A cultural bias known as \u2018masculine defaults\u2019 and how it has contributed to women\u2019s under-representation in the workplace will be at the centre of the next Women in Leadership event.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, April 11, Shawna Chen, Associate Professor in the Goodman School of Business, will discuss masculine defaults, which she describes as \u201chow we typically consider certain characteristics and behaviours, often associated with men, as a standard or best practice that should be rewarded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This includes qualities often seen as necessary for success, such as confidence, leadership and self-reliance.<\/p>\n<p>Chen, a self-described \u201cserial entrepreneur in information technology\u201d and former investment banker, will explore how masculine defaults may have contributed to women\u2019s under-representation in the workplace, particularly in the entrepreneurship ecosystems. She will also give practical examples to mitigate masculine defaults bias in different contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Chen\u2019s research focuses on empowering under-represented members of society \u2014 women, BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+ and people with intersectional identities \u2014 to create economic and social impact through entrepreneurship and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>All are invited to attend online Tuesday, April 11, from noon to 1 p.m. via Microsoft Teams.
