{"id":84665,"date":"2023-04-03T13:08:43","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T17:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=84665"},"modified":"2023-04-04T11:26:24","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T15:26:24","slug":"president-rigg-talks-fostering-creativity-innovation-at-women-in-leadership-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/04\/president-rigg-talks-fostering-creativity-innovation-at-women-in-leadership-event\/","title":{"rendered":"President Rigg talks fostering creativity, innovation at Women in Leadership event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/wil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women in Leadership Initiative<\/a> recently gathered in-person for the first time since 2020, coming together to hear Brock University President Lesley Rigg speak about \u201cinvisible leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hybrid event, which was also streamed online, saw Rigg share a vision of leadership that relies on redrawing perceptions of leaders and inviting others to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get into leadership roles because we care and because we\u2019re passionate about what we do,\u201d Rigg said. But she was also candid about the effects of gender bias, which she likened to \u201ca tonne of feathers,\u201d and the constant need for \u201cflicking off feathers\u201d while navigating each day.<\/p>\n<p>She reflected on the importance of creating inclusive environments and of promoting opportunities for service and leadership within such environments, challenging the audience to consider, \u201cHow can we create an environment that encourages leadership, that encourages creativity and innovation?\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_84667\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84667\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-84667\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/PresidentRigg_17-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"During a presentation, President Lesley Rigg looks at a projected slide showing a word cloud with the word \u201cleadership\u201d highlighted in the centre.\" width=\"378\" height=\"252\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-84667\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock President Lesley Rigg spoke about the concept of &#8220;invisible leadership&#8221; during the Women in Leadership event on Friday, March 31.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rigg emphasized the importance of thoughtfulness, reminding the audience that no one sees the amount of consideration that goes into a decision, but that leading without thinking is merely reacting.<\/p>\n<p>Following the main presentation, PhD candidate Caroline Hummell spoke about the newly launched <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/women-in-leadership-mentorship-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deborah Rosati Women in Leadership Mentorship program<\/a>, which is currently recruiting for mentors and mentees.<\/p>\n<p>The event also included a reception sponsored by Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada (SWAAC), which will host its annual conference at Western University this spring.
