At 22, he would be sent to a full-time health-care setting for people with mental illness. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Hartmanns were <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a primary focus of the movement of &#8216;inclusion&#8217; for educating children with autism in the U.S. during the period from 1990 through 2004. They were entangled in a five-year litigation with their local school board that ended in the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The records of their legal battle, along with other documents, videos and photos chronicling Mark\u2019s medical and educational journey are housed with Brock University Library\u2019s Archives and Special Collections as part of its growing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/archives\/featured-collections\/#1579637621699-530644f3-07dd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Autism Collection<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The litigation became international news and an example of how many school boards were not providing appropriate education for children with autism, said Joseph.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMark was the rallying call for people in education to support inclusion,\u201d he said. \u201cMany organizations that represented children with a wide variety of disabilities supported us.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dr.library.brocku.ca\/handle\/10464\/16538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mark Hartmann fonds<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in Brock\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Autism Collection<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> includes correspondence with school administrators, teachers and aides; individual education plans; test results and schoolwork from kindergarten to high school; transcripts and legal briefs from court trials; and other material that details Mark\u2019s life and educational experiences. Joseph and Roxana also included a book the couple wrote together, <\/span><em>A Live Controversy: A Story of Autism and a Family\u2019s Determination<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThere are many aspects of our experience that are documented in our\u00a0collection\u00a0of papers, tapes and videos,\u201d said Joseph. &#8220;It would be a wealth of information for any researcher. Nonetheless, he&#8217;s a very intelligent young man. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">He was one of the few students with non-verbal\u00a0autism\u00a0in the U.S. to graduate\u00a0from high school with a regular academic diploma.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even more important to Jospeh and Roxana was that the inclusive education program taught Mark the coping and companionship skills needed to interact with others.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt&#8217;s about teaching them the power they have to become members of society \u2014 to be part of a community, to vote, to be able to work, to have friends, relationships, friendships, even getting married,\u201d said Roxana. \u201cThis is the power of what is today full citizenship. And the power to have a job, drive a car and be able to live life just like everybody else.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With World Autism Awareness Day approaching on Sunday, April 2, Joseph said it&#8217;s important to continue educating people about autism and the benefits of inclusive education for children with disabilities.
