{"id":84397,"date":"2023-03-23T10:00:08","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T14:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=84397"},"modified":"2023-03-27T09:27:46","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T13:27:46","slug":"brock-community-invited-to-cayuga-language-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/03\/brock-community-invited-to-cayuga-language-cafe\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock community invited to Cayuga Language Caf\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cayuga language and culture will be celebrated during the second annual Cayuga Language Caf\u00e9 on Wednesday, March 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Brock\u2019s Welch Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock community is invited to visit WH 303 any time during the event to learn about language resources developed by students in the Introduction to Cayuga course taught by Bobby Henry, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education.<\/p>\n<p>Henry and his students aim to promote awareness of Cayuga, an Indigenous language local to Brock, and the importance of preserving Indigenous languages.<\/p>\n<p>Cayuga is an Iroquoian language spoken mainly along the Grand River in southern Ontario. Just 65 people listed Cayuga as their mother tongue in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/t1\/tbl1\/en\/tv.action?pid=9810023001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2021 census<\/a>. A number of Canada\u2019s Indigenous languages are vulnerable or endangered according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.<\/p>\n<p>One of Henry\u2019s goals as an Indigenous language instructor is to help others understand the importance of language as a lens for understanding Indigenous cultures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn essence, we speak who we are through language,\u201d says Henry. \u201cOur language was given to us by our Creator and passed down to us through time. Students learning this language grow to better understand how language and culture work in tandem with one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Ryanne Logan, a fifth-year Neuroscience student, the course has been an opportunity to learn more about other Indigenous cultures around her. Logan is Lenape, from the Delaware Nation near Chatham-Kent, and is a member of the Turtle Clan. She is pursuing a minor in Indigenous Studies.<\/p>\n<p>The Introduction to Cayuga course has also helped Logan navigate the journey of learning her own traditional language.
