{"id":8391,"date":"2011-02-25T14:12:31","date_gmt":"2011-02-25T19:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=8391"},"modified":"2011-02-25T14:14:10","modified_gmt":"2011-02-25T19:14:10","slug":"fiona-hunter-will-give-talk-on-ticks-to-local-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2011\/02\/fiona-hunter-will-give-talk-on-ticks-to-local-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Fiona Hunter will give talk on ticks to local group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/mathematics-science\/departments-and-centres\/biology\/people\/fiona-hunter\" target=\"_blank\">Fiona Hunter<\/a> will give a talk on Feb. 28 about the emerging problem of ticks in Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>The professor of Biological Sciences will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/niagara.cioc.ca\/record\/NIA0670\" target=\"_blank\">Peninsula Field Naturalists Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter\u2019s talk will discuss how ticks are second only to mosquitoes as vectors of disease to humans. The black-legged tick (aka deer tick) has made its way into the Niagara Region and many of these ticks carry the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/cairns-health-bioscience\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex<\/a> will allow Hunter\u2019s research group to examine the effect that <em>Borrelia burgdorferi<\/em> (the causative agent of Lyme disease) might have on the longevity and behaviour of infected ticks.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to ticks, Hunter maintains her long-running research into the evolution of sugar-feeding in biting flies.
