{"id":83811,"date":"2023-02-27T12:18:02","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T17:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=83811"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:54:35","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:54:35","slug":"opinion-tony-volk-discusses-strategies-to-deal-with-vladimir-putins-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/02\/opinion-tony-volk-discusses-strategies-to-deal-with-vladimir-putins-bullying\/","title":{"rendered":"OPINION: Tony Volk discusses strategies to deal with Vladimir Putin\u2019s bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University Professor of Child and Youth Studies Tony Volk had a piece recently published in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/opinion\/contributors\/2023\/02\/26\/bullying-strategies-could-help-with-putin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hamilton Spectator<\/a><\/em> about strategies that could be used to contend against the bullying tendencies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>He writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt has been one year since Vladimir Putin ripped a page out of the classic schoolyard bully handbook and employed it in the invasion of Ukraine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Russian President saw something he wanted and used force to try and take it from a weaker peer \u2014 like an international shakedown for lunch money.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Tragically, that bullying has cost the lives of tens of thousands of people and injured and displaced countless more. And it\u2019s showing no signs of slowing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While the consequences of Putin\u2019s actions go far beyond the scope of the schoolyard, his behaviour was, and remains, a clear analogue of what bullying researchers like myself study in schools across the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The bad news is that we know bullying is hard to stop. Ignoring the problem rarely works.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Bullying is goal-driven. Most bullies won\u2019t stop until they get what they want.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Bullying also thrives on power imbalances, meaning victims often have less power. Thus, relying on them to win an uphill battle is a bad idea.
