{"id":83686,"date":"2023-02-16T12:28:58","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T17:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=83686"},"modified":"2023-02-16T17:00:09","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T22:00:09","slug":"deadline-extended-for-sustainability-poetry-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/02\/deadline-extended-for-sustainability-poetry-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadline extended for Sustainability Poetry Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The deadline for Brock University\u2019s ninth-annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/12\/submissions-open-for-eighth-annual-sustainability-poetry-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sustainability Poetry Contest<\/a>\u00a0has been extended to Thursday, Feb. 23 at 11:59 p.m., providing extra time for poets in the Niagara region to submit their entries.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the 2023 contest, hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/unesco-chair\/sustainability-poetry-contest\/\">Brock\u2019s United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair<\/a>, is International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasic sciences are part of everything we do, with the pandemic response being a prime example of the power of global scientific collaboration to address world challenges,\u201d said Liette Vasseur, Brock University Biological Sciences Professor and UNESCO Chair on Community Sustainability: From Global to Local. \u201cThis year\u2019s topic seeks to explore the need for both mastering and taking into account basic science as a means for achieving truly sustainable development of the Earth going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All Niagara residents are eligible to enter their original, unpublished poems for this year\u2019s contest, which includes categories for elementary, high school and post-secondary students, as well as the general public. Poems will be accepted in English and French, and up to two poems can be submitted per person.<\/p>\n<p>Poems can be submitted by visiting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/unesco-chair\/sustainability-poetry-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UNESCO Chair\u2019s website<\/a>. Prizes, such as books and gift cards, will be awarded in each of the four categories. The winners will be publicly announced and all poems are published in an e-book compilation.<\/p>\n<p>All poets will be celebrated at a Poetry Day Celebration on Tuesday, March 21.
