Brock students and employees are encouraged to test their phishing identification skills as part of the University\u2019s month-long <\/span>\u2018Level Up\u2019 cybersecurity awareness campaign<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A new <\/span>phishing simulation<\/span><\/a> created by Brock University Information Technology Services (ITS) will send realistic phishing emails to enrolled participants in a controlled manner throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phishing\u202fis a tactic cybercriminals use to steal information via fraudulent emails and text messages posing as legitimate.\u00a0Messages entice recipients to click on a link that will compromise their personal information and data.<\/span><\/p>\n

The phishing simulation was created as one of several tools to educate the Brock community about the seriousness of phishing emails and equip employees and students with the knowledge, experience and\u00a0skills to recognize signs of phishing attacks and take appropriate action\u00a0against them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Any information collected as part of the simulation will not be recorded. Anyone who participates in the phishing simulation will be entered into a draw to win a prize.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brock community members can visit the <\/span>Cybersecurity Awareness website<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>enrol in the phishing simulation<\/span><\/a>; view personalized\u00a0<\/span>phishing simulation statistics<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0such as the number of phishing emails received as part of the simulation;\u00a0and complete a short <\/span>phishing training program<\/span><\/a>, which finishes with a quiz that asks participants to identify several emails as phishing or legitimate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Common signs of phishing\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Recognizing the signs of a phishing email could prevent a phishing attack. Some common signs of phishing are highlighted and numbered in the phishing email sample below.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Unrecognizable email address<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Urgent request with a deadline<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Spelling or grammar errors<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Strange URLs or links requiring to click<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Fake Brock logo<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
