{"id":83455,"date":"2023-02-07T15:40:18","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T20:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=83455"},"modified":"2023-02-07T15:40:18","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T20:40:18","slug":"how-black-history-has-helped-to-shape-brock-student-athletes-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/02\/how-black-history-has-helped-to-shape-brock-student-athletes-life\/","title":{"rendered":"How Black history has helped to shape Brock student-athlete\u2019s life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Black history lives with Audrey Ntetani every day of the year, not just during the month of February.<\/p>\n<p>The second-year Brock Critical Criminology student-athlete views Black history as a road map to how she can thrive in her life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack history taught me many lessons, equipped me with the tools needed to express myself and love myself, and allowed me to live in my truth,\u201d said Ntetani, who plays on the varsity women\u2019s basketball team.<\/p>\n<p>She encourages others to embrace everything Black culture has done to influence the world through sport, books, dance, music, fashion and other forms of art.<\/p>\n<p>And that advice applies beyond Black History Month and African Heritage Month in February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack history teaches me where I\u2019ve come from and what my ancestors have overcome to pave the road for me to stand here and be who I am,\u201d Ntetani said. \u201cI think a meaningful way to celebrate would be for people to educate themselves on the past. I believe that will lead to a better appreciation for the present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock University <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/01\/black-history-month-initiatives-to-focus-on-collaboration-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">celebrates Black History Month and African Heritage Month in February<\/a> to foster a culture of inclusivity while acknowledging the achievements of Black Canadians and beyond. A developing list of events taking place throughout the month is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/organization\/african-heritage-month\">ExperienceBU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 1, Brock Sports and Recreation launched a fundraiser for its Black\/Indigenous Heritage Student-Athlete (BIHS) bursary through proceeds of an \u2018All for Change\u2019 T-shirt and tickets to varsity home games.<\/p>\n<p>Ten dollars from each shirt sold will go directly towards the BIHS bursary. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/allforchange.itemorder.com\/shop\/home\/\">online store<\/a> to place an order.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s sense of community is one of the many reasons Ntetani chose to attend and compete for the Badgers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the primary reasons I chose Brock was because of its diversity. There are many clubs here that explore and celebrate so many different cultures and groups of people,\u201d she said. \u201cMy time here has been refreshing. I\u2019ve been able to connect with many genuine and loving people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Black history is the road map to Ntetani\u2019s life than her mother, Fifi Kumbi, is the compass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom is a resilient woman. She never backs down from a challenge.
