{"id":83321,"date":"2023-02-01T15:31:46","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T20:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=83321"},"modified":"2023-02-02T16:29:17","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T21:29:17","slug":"public-event-to-explore-heart-disease-through-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/02\/public-event-to-explore-heart-disease-through-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Public event to explore heart disease through art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An upcoming Brock University event is using art to help the community understand what it\u2019s like to live with heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>Held in conjunction with Heart Month, \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/sokeefemccarthy.ca\/he-art-istic-journeys-the-heart-dis-ease-play\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He-art-istic Journeys<\/a>\u2019 will share recent arts-based data on health-related human experiences. The public event will take place Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Brock\u2019s Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by Brock researcher Sheila O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy and the Heart Innovation Research Program team, He-art-istic Journeys provides a glimpse into the team\u2019s arts-based projects that explore life with heart disease, including the emotional burden of living with a diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>According to Health Canada, about one in 12 (or 2.6 million) Canadians aged 20 and older live with diagnosed heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its focus on heart disease, the event will also share the experiences of nurses during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The evening will include artistic presentations of poems, songs and artwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt is a very effective way to learn and remember because you use your whole human body, heart and soul to take that knowledge up,\u201d says O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy, an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing and a registered nurse who has worked for more than 30 years in clinical practice.<\/p>\n<p>The evening will also see cast members from the \u2018Heart-DIS-ease PlaY\u2019 interact with the audience to enhance engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis type of involvement, known as applied theatre, is a form of education and research that uses the benefits of having very impactful conversations in the context of theatre,\u201d O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy says. \u201cBy workshopping a scene, we will be creating a creative, safe and reciprocal space for learning and reflective practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The interactional information session will be followed by a reception with a chance to discuss the highlighted research and creations with the artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He-art-istic Journeys\u2019 is intended for the general public, health-care providers, students, those affected by health-related illness, researchers, educators and artists.<\/p>\n<p>This event is free but <a href=\"http:\/\/sokeefemccarthy.ca\/he-art-istic-journeys-the-heart-dis-ease-play\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">registration is required<\/a>.
