{"id":83271,"date":"2023-01-30T11:41:35","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T16:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=83271"},"modified":"2023-01-30T19:44:02","modified_gmt":"2023-01-31T00:44:02","slug":"brock-scholars-public-lecture-to-break-down-capitalist-decay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/01\/brock-scholars-public-lecture-to-break-down-capitalist-decay\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock scholar\u2019s public lecture to break down capitalist decay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock\u2019s Department of Sociology invites the community to a public lecture by Professor Murray Smith later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Smith, who retired from the department in December, will present \u201cValorization, Financialization and Crisis: A Marxist Analysis of 21st Century Capitalist Decay\u201d on Friday, Feb. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. in PL 600F.<\/p>\n<p>The event occurs in conjunction with a class session of SOCI 4P37, \u201cExploring alternatives to capitalism,\u201d taught by Associate Professor Jonah Butovsky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe talk will reflect Murray\u2019s contribution to understanding the crisis tendencies of the capitalist economy,\u201d says Butovsky. \u201cThis research shows that apart from the tragic impact of capitalist exploitation, the capitalist system itself is unsustainable and in its \u2018twilight\u2019 phase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith spent three decades researching Marxist political economy and has written several books on the subject. His most recent book, <a href=\"https:\/\/fernwoodpublishing.ca\/book\/twilight-capitalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Twilight Capitalism: Karl Marx and the Decay of the Profit System<\/em><\/a>, was co-authored with Butovsky and Critical Sociology Master of Arts (MA) alumnus Josh Watterton (MA \u201919) and is being read by SOCI 4P37 students this term.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_83273\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83273\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-83273\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/MurraySmith-807x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A portrait of Murray Smith with a bookshelf in the background.\" width=\"340\" height=\"442\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-83273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Murray Smith joined Brock\u2019s Department of Sociology in 1993 and retired at the end of 2022.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But current students aren\u2019t the only ones looking forward to Friday\u2019s lecture, as alumni are also planning to return to campus for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Hayslip (MA \u201921) says that Smith\u2019s teaching and mentorship has had a lasting impact on his own journey as a scholar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m excited to attend Murray\u2019s lecture because his teaching profoundly impacted how I see the world \u2014 before I met Murray, I had always seen the left as pollyannaish, but Murray helped me understand why the\u00a0left\u2019s attempts to make a better world\u00a0haven\u2019t been more successful,\u201d says Hayslip. \u201cOn a more personal level,\u00a0I doubt I would have finished my MA without his supervision, and I\u2019m proud to call him my friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among many other campus and department activities, Smith founded the Brock Socialist Club (BSC) in the late 1990s to help students understand what Butovsky describes as \u201cpressing social, political and economic problems\u201d through socialist analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMurray brought a number of prominent socialist scholars, providing a great opportunity for the Brock community to learn from people like Bryan Palmer, John Clarke, Robert Brenner and Vivek Chibber,\u201d says Butovsky. \u201cHe also brought in representatives from a range of socialist organizations to provide discussion and debate. There were a number of long-standing members of the BSC, but Murray provided intellectual and organizational continuity for about 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He adds that Friday\u2019s lecture is the latest reflection of Smith\u2019s commitment to using \u201cthe power of ideas to generate action to change the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMurray wasn&#8217;t content to have his work sit on library shelves; he wanted to encourage connections between his ideas and the broader world through public talks, educational events and the mentorship of the next generations of critical scholars,\u201d says Butovsky. \u201cHe has always placed the project of the critique and ultimately the transformation away from capitalism above the traditional markers of scholarly achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chair and Associate Professor Mary-Beth Raddon agrees that Smith\u2019s impact on his students has been far-reaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMurray Smith has introduced a generation of students to socialist ideas,\u201d she says. \u201cThe department wishes to bring him back to speak to students in SOCI 4P37 to recognize how influential and student-focused his scholarship has been and extend his efforts to make his scholarship accessible to Brock students once more.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock\u2019s Department of Sociology invites the community to a public lecture by Professor Murray Smith later this week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":27,"featured_media":83272,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[119,9794,1,38],"tags":[2524,522,5964,3505,12382,12381],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83271"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/27"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=83271"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83271\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":83274,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/83271\/revisions\/83274"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/83272"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=83271"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=83271"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=83271"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
