{"id":83166,"date":"2023-01-25T10:07:23","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T15:07:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=83166"},"modified":"2023-01-25T19:30:40","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T00:30:40","slug":"brock-badgers-aim-to-end-mental-health-stigmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/01\/brock-badgers-aim-to-end-mental-health-stigmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock Badgers aim to end mental health stigmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University\u2019s student-athletes are letting others know they are not alone.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock Badgers\u2019 sports teams, led by the Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC), participated in Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day on Wednesday, Jan. 25 to raise awareness of mental health and create positive change, specifically among their peers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are more than just an athlete, and it can be difficult at times to remember to find time for the other things in your life,\u201d said SALC co-president Meera Sayal, a fourth-year Kinesiology student on the women\u2019s volleyball team. \u201cWhether that\u2019s focusing on your social life, relationships with your family or, the most important in my opinion, time for yourself and well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Badgers\u2019 will be giving away Bell Let\u2019s Talk toques and rally towels to the first 100 fans at varsity home games Friday, Jan. 27.<\/p>\n<p>Games include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men\u2019s hockey vs. University of Toronto (Canada Games Park), 6 p.m. | <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.universitytickets.com\/w\/event.aspx?id=1950&amp;r=cd27ea09642d461da442fda29d6feb0c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TICKETS<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s volleyball vs. York University, (Bob Davis Gymnasium), 6 p.m. | <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.universitytickets.com\/w\/event.aspx?id=1967&amp;r=3b32eb4471db4e7b821637e1e228a5d7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TICKETS<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Men\u2019s volleyball vs. York University, (Bob Davis Gymnasium), 8 p.m. | <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.universitytickets.com\/w\/event.aspx?id=1967&amp;r=3b32eb4471db4e7b821637e1e228a5d7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TICKETS<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The University&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/health-wellness-accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre<\/a> (SWAC) will have a table outside the entrance to Bob Davis Gymnasium with information about student support services, including crisis resources, Personal Counselling Services, Student Health Services and Student Accessibility Services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers may gain strength to speak about what they\u2019re going through from hearing stories about struggles with depression, eating disorders or anxiety,\u201d said SALC co-president Mario Peccia, a third-year Sport Management student on the men\u2019s hockey team. \u201cWe should all work together to end the stigma of weakness sometimes associated with mental health and replace it with a show of strength and unity. You are never alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s mental health supports have been nationally recognized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/10\/brock-scores-high-marks-for-student-support-satisfaction-in-national-university-rankings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> University Rankings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SALC vice-president Rebekah Feld, a first-year Master of Science (Applied Health Sciences) student on the women\u2019s hockey team, said education about mental health is the first step to removing any stigma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock has a ton of resources and it\u2019s important that students, student-athletes and coaches are aware of these,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Brock Sports recently added athlete-specific counselling, and I think that\u2019s also a huge step forward. Being a student athlete carries many unique challenges, from managing academics and physical injuries to pressures around athletic performance. It\u2019s important to check-in on each other.
