{"id":83113,"date":"2023-01-24T10:55:15","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T15:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=83113"},"modified":"2023-01-24T18:13:08","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T23:13:08","slug":"workshop-to-build-data-skills-of-social-sciences-researchers-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2023\/01\/workshop-to-build-data-skills-of-social-sciences-researchers-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop to build data skills of social sciences researchers, students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Brock University Library is hosting a free two-day workshop that will equip graduate students and researchers in the social sciences with the foundational skills needed to work with data and code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brockdsl.github.io\/2023-02-23-Brock-Hybrid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Data Carpentry for Social Scientists<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> will take place in a hybrid format from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 and Friday, Feb. 24 during the University\u2019s Reading Week. While the online component is at capacity, there is limited space available to attend in person in Thistle Complex TH 253. To secure a spot, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.ca\/e\/data-carpentry-social-science-curriculum-tickets-419642521077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">register via Eventbrite<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The event is organized by the Library\u2019s Digital Scholarship Lab (DSL) and follows curriculum developed by Data Carpentries, which is an international organization that teaches technical skills to novices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe workshops are structured in such a way that you don\u2019t need any background knowledge or experience using data tools to participate,\u201d says Digital Scholarship Librarian Tim Ribaric. \u201cIt provides a low barrier of entry to the world of computational research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The DSL typically offers two or three <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carpentries.org\/workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carpentries workshops<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> each year. While the Carpentries curriculum also offers software and library categories, next month\u2019s workshop will focus on computational methods that can be used in social sciences research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe always try to pick a different thread so that we can engage a different group of researchers on campus,\u201d says Ribaric. \u201cThe goal of this session is to introduce social scientists to what it is like working with tabular data.
