{"id":81514,"date":"2022-10-27T10:28:20","date_gmt":"2022-10-27T14:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=81514"},"modified":"2022-10-27T16:42:36","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T20:42:36","slug":"brock-its-offers-tips-to-prevent-ransomware-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/10\/brock-its-offers-tips-to-prevent-ransomware-attacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock ITS offers tips to prevent ransomware attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A ransomware attack can result in permanent data loss, intellectual property theft, privacy breaches and reputational damage for Brock employees and the greater University community.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2021, colleges and universities worldwide experienced a surge in ransomware attacks, and some incurred significant operational and financial costs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As part of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/10\/vigilance-encouraged-during-cybersecurity-awareness-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cybersecurity Awareness Month<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Brock Information Technology Services (ITS) is educating the University community with information and tips that can help protect technology users\u2019 identities and data.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ransomware is a type of malicious software that encrypts files to block access to information unless the infected user pays a ransom. When hit with a ransomware attack, users can lose access to their important files, apps and computer. In most cases, it is impossible to recover the encrypted files without payment, and even if the ransom is paid, there is no guarantee the files will be recovered.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Types of ransomware attacks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW37453610 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37453610 BCX4\">The most <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW37453610 BCX4\">prevalent ransomware attacks are executed via phishing emails or security holes:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW37453610 BCX4\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phishing emails <span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Attackers use phishing emails to deliver ransomware files to a victim via an attachment or a link to download. Once the ransomware file is downloaded and executed, the victim\u2019s files are encrypted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Security holes <span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Attackers exploit security holes in a victim\u2019s computer to compromise or gain control of the computer without needing to trick the victim. Once the computer is compromised, the attackers can execute ransomware that encrypts the victim\u2019s files.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When a computer is infected with ransomware, attackers may try to infect and gain access to other users and computers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to prevent ransomware attacks\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The following tips improve users\u2019 defence against ransomware attacks:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ensure antivirus software is installed on computer systems and that it\u2019s up to date.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keep operating systems and all software up to date.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments or emails from unfamiliar people and organizations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Do not visit unknown websites and be careful of clicking on links.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Only install software from trusted sources, such as Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Microsoft Store.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks, since many of them are not secure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Regularly backup important files, preferably in the cloud such as OneDrive.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is important users act quickly if they suspect they\u2019ve been hit with a ransomware attack. Immediately disconnect the affected computer from the network by unplugging the network cable or disconnecting from the Wi-Fi to minimize damage and stop the spread of the ransomware. Even if the device has not been completely affected, turn it off to help contain the attack and prevent further damage and data loss.
