{"id":81396,"date":"2022-10-21T12:38:15","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T16:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=81396"},"modified":"2022-10-21T16:38:29","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T20:38:29","slug":"pms-resignation-is-another-hit-to-britains-reputation-says-brock-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/10\/pms-resignation-is-another-hit-to-britains-reputation-says-brock-expert\/","title":{"rendered":"PM\u2019s resignation is another hit to Britain\u2019s reputation, says Brock expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The unprecedented resignation of British Prime Minister Liz Truss after only 45 days on the job does little to right the ship of a nation that has been staggering from crisis to crisis, says a Brock University researcher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means more and more uncertainty in a time marked by the war in Ukraine and the ailing U.K. economy,\u201d says Associate Professor of Political Science Paul Hamilton. \u201cMarkets seemed to respond favourably to Truss\u2019 resignation, but uncertainty around her replacement could add more chaos to the sinking pound and high inflation rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81403\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81403\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-81403\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Paul-Hamilton-814x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A man in a plaid shirt and black coat stands in front of a leafy background\" width=\"234\" height=\"302\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Associate Professor of Political Science Paul Hamilton.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Though Truss will now go down as the nation\u2019s shortest-tenured leader, Hamilton says the conditions for her demise and the damage to the U.K.\u2019s status around the globe cannot be pinned on her alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBritain&#8217;s reputation for stable, reliable governance and global leadership had taken a hit before Truss&#8217; resignation,\u201d he says. \u201cThe departure from the European Union and the messy way in which it happened cost the U.K. reputationally.
