{"id":81322,"date":"2022-10-18T13:40:20","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T17:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=81322"},"modified":"2023-03-22T13:10:34","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T17:10:34","slug":"brock-alumna-among-canadas-5-to-watch-in-sport-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/10\/brock-alumna-among-canadas-5-to-watch-in-sport-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock alumna among Canada&#8217;s &#8216;5 to Watch&#8217; in sport industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Erin Mathany (BSM \u201905) was a student in Brock University\u2019s Sport Management program, the sport industry was dominated by men.<\/p>\n<p>Two decades later, she is being recognized as one of this year\u2019s \u20185 to Watch\u2019 in sport business amongst the first-ever all-women cohort of award recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Presented by George Brown College in partnership with <em>The Globe and Mail<\/em>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgebrown.ca\/5towatch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5 to Watch \u2014 Canada&#8217;s Sports Business Awards<\/a> celebrate sport business professionals who have achieved significant success and impact during the early and middle stages of their careers before the age of 40.<\/p>\n<p>Since graduating from Brock, Mathany has ascended the sport business ladder \u2014 from managing partnerships and commercial rights with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and directing commercial affairs and business development with the Canadian Olympic Committee, to <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/spma-experience-leads-alumna-to-canada-games-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overseeing marketing, communications and partnerships with the Canada Games Council<\/a>. Now, as Senior Vice-President of Marketing for the Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club, Mathany oversees brand, marketing and digital content as a member of the senior executive team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been curious and eager to learn and try new areas of the business \u2014 I\u2019ve taken some leaps to get to where I am in my career,\u201d she said of pivoting from sponsorship and business development to senior marketing roles. \u201cI wanted to try out the marketing side of the business, and that led me to the Canada Games Council, where my team and I renovated the brand with a new logo, look, feel and tone of voice. I\u2019m lucky to be among them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mathany is part of the recent surge of women in a formerly male-dominated domain. There are more women working in sport now than there have ever been in the past, both on the business and team sides, and competition on the field of play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe growth of women\u2019s sport is undeniable and is becoming more commercially viable,\u201d she said. \u201cThe Canadian Women in Sport Group is working hard to push professional women sport agendas, because we want to give girls the same opportunities that boys get in Canada to compete professionally. I\u2019m excited and optimistic about the path ahead and looking to contribute to keeping the momentum going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mathany is grateful for her experience with Brock\u2019s Sport Management program, crediting its practical approach to gaining real-world experience through internships and the mentorship received from professors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey get to know students on a deeper level and follow their careers after they graduate,\u201d she said. \u201cThe relationships I\u2019ve developed over the years with former classmates and professors \u2014 and having those people advocate for me \u2014 have been an important part of my career advancement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to staying in touch with past professors and classmates, Mathany has maintained her connection with Brock by chairing the Sport Management Alumni Board, engaging with students by participating on alumni panels, <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/new-executive-brings-fresh-ideas-strategic-plan-to-alumni-association\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leading the Brock University Alumni Association as its President<\/a>, and most recently, volunteering as a member of the Brock University Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n<p>Her ongoing advocacy and support of Brock and the Sport Management program was recognized in 2015, when she was honoured with the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/10\/erin-mathany-gives-back-to-program-she-credits-with-her-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock University Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Award<\/a> and in 2017, when she received a <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/03\/sport-management-marks-20-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sport Management Service Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Tiidus, Professor and Dean of Brock\u2019s Faculty of Applied Sciences, praises Mathany for her accomplishments and continued community engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Mathany\u2019s recent recognition in Canada\u2019s sport business industry is well deserved,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are thankful for her continued engagement with the Sport Management program and are very proud to have her as one of the Faculty\u2019s many highly successful graduates.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Erin Mathany (BSM \u201905) was a student in Brock University\u2019s Sport Management program, the sport industry was dominated by men.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":81324,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[119,36,7484,7,1,4],"tags":[3333,5521,4994,7488,12092,57,9493],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/81322"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=81322"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/81322\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":81329,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/81322\/revisions\/81329"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/81324"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=81322"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=81322"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=81322"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
