{"id":81188,"date":"2022-10-14T11:46:32","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T15:46:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=81188"},"modified":"2022-10-14T18:31:31","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T22:31:31","slug":"double-degree-student-among-brock-employee-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/10\/double-degree-student-among-brock-employee-graduates\/","title":{"rendered":"Double degree student among Brock employee graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ashley Harold (BBA \u201922) is crossing the Convocation stage twice this month, first in Canada and then in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock University employee is one of several staff members who graduated during Brock\u2019s Fall Convocation ceremonies on Friday, Oct. 14.<\/p>\n<p>Harold, who began working with the University\u2019s Goodman School of Business as its Global Growth Co-ordinator shortly after completing coursework this past May, received a <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/goodman\/programs\/international-double-degree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of Business Administration Co-op International Double Degree<\/a> from Brock and will fly to Ireland later this month to attend Dublin City University\u2019s convocation ceremonies to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Global Business.<\/p>\n<p>Goodman\u2019s double degree programs grant students two degrees, one from Brock and one from a European partner university, while giving students work experience on both continents.<\/p>\n<p>Dublin City University was an easy choice for Harold, who\u2019s been an Irish dancer since she was three years old and has family in the Emerald Isle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving in Ireland has always been a dream of mine,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The double degree program allowed Harold to immerse herself in two universities and gain an extended international experience with a group of like-minded students.<\/p>\n<p>She says her favourite part of living and studying abroad was stepping out of her comfort zone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was able to experience different parts of the world from both an academic and professional lens that translates back to what I am now doing in Canada,\u201d she said. \u201cOn a personal level, it allowed me to become more adventurous, resourceful and independent with a new perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While studying at Brock, Harold was highly involved in student leadership positions with Goodman\u2019s Business Students\u2019 Association, including the Brock Marketing Association, the Brock Innovation Group and DECA U. She also competed in several international academic case competitions with DECA U, JDC Central and the World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara, among others \u2014 her teams bringing home three first-place finishes and other accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in January, Harold will be taking courses towards completing Goodman&#8217;s accelerated Master of Business Administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to utilize my education and experiences to support others and ultimately make a difference in my area of work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81205\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81205\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-81205 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Sarah-Burger-699x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A woman in a blue robe stands in front of a beige brick background in an outdoor setting.\" width=\"234\" height=\"351\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah Burger (BA \u201916, MEd \u201922)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Like Harold, Sarah Burger (BA \u201916, MEd \u201922) hopes her education will make an impact in her professional roles.<\/p>\n<p>The Graduate Recruitment Co-ordinator with Brock\u2019s Faculty of Graduate Studies graduated with a <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/education\/programs\/graduate-programs\/master-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master of Education<\/a> in Administration and Leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Burger was intrigued by the program\u2019s diverse approach to public sector studies and thought it would appeal to her interest in organizational studies, community engagement, and public administration and policy.<\/p>\n<p>Her interest in Brock\u2019s graduate community has led to her current role with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and her role with the Graduate Students\u2019 Association as their Vice-President, Communications and Advancement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to show students that grad studies is not as intimidating as it may seem,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to break down barriers and make grad studies at Brock approachable and attainable so students can hone their passions or discover a new interest. We have a great support system of faculty and staff here at Brock that can help guide them along their path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Christine Richard (BEd \u201922), pursuing a second degree at Brock was an opportunity to contribute to her personal growth.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81191\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81191\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-81191\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Christine-Richard3-699x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A woman in a brown and black blazer stands in front of windows with sun shining through them\" width=\"230\" height=\"345\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christine Richard (BEd \u201922)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last year, Richard took a pause from her longtime role as an Alumni Relations Officer to work on secondment with Brock\u2019s Student Life and Success team as their Co-Curricular Engagement Co-ordinator, all while continuing coursework towards a <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/education\/programs\/adult-education\/#1586826335150-dfbf4c09-9aae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of Education in Adult Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m continually looking to expand my knowledge and strengths in providing the best and most relevant programming and support to Brock students and alumni,\u201d she said. \u201cThe Adult Education program allowed me to develop my knowledge and skills in coaching, training and adult skill development, which has had a positive impact on my professional contributions to Brock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s favourite part of the program was learning from her peers, who she said had a variety of professional backgrounds, perspectives and career aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>Although she is happy to end a five-year chapter of completing her undergraduate degree part time, Richard is looking forward to continuing her studies and plans to enrol in Brock\u2019s Master of Education next fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll never stop learning,\u201d she said. \u201cBrock offers many opportunities to grow professionally and personally, such as the employee mentorship program, which I was part of, and its tuition waver program for employees.
