{"id":81010,"date":"2022-10-12T12:23:53","date_gmt":"2022-10-12T16:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=81010"},"modified":"2022-10-12T18:08:09","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T22:08:09","slug":"communication-grads-credit-experiential-learning-for-quick-career-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/10\/communication-grads-credit-experiential-learning-for-quick-career-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Communication grads credit experiential learning for quick career success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ben Skippen (BA \u201920) is one of several graduates from Brock&#8217;s Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film (CPCF) translating theory and skills training from their degrees into growing careers.<\/p>\n<p>The Media and Communication Studies alumnus returned to campus for Wednesday\u2019s legacy Convocation ceremony, travelling from Ottawa, where he began working shortly after graduation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81013\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81013\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-81013\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Kristal-Lee.jpeg\" alt=\"A woman in a blue robe sits in front of a blue background holding red flowers.\" width=\"234\" height=\"293\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Media and Communication graduate Kristal Lee (BA \u201922)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Skippen landed full-time work as an army public affairs officer, first at the Royal Canadian Navy Headquarters and presently on the Military Personnel Command public affairs team at the National Defence Headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy degree was useful and relevant to the work I do,\u201d Skippen says. \u201cHomework examples like creating a communications plan, social media, news articles and presentations are all skills I use on the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He isn\u2019t alone in crediting the experiential side of his education with his career success.<\/p>\n<p>Media and Communication grad Kristal Lee (BA \u201922) now works in Hong Kong as a Digital Content Executive managing search-engine optimization, content creation and performance assessment of different platforms to assist her marketing team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the best course and the course I have gained the most from is COMM 4F00, which gave me a chance to gain experiences before graduation,\u201d says Lee. \u201cThis was a very precious opportunity for me to get what I wanted to learn and try to put the knowledge to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81015\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81015\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-81015\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Clair-Terrio-840x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A woman in a white shirt stands in front of a grey background.\" width=\"231\" height=\"289\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Business Communication graduate Claire Terrio (BA \u201921)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Claire Terrio (BA \u201921) majored in Business Communication and converted her CPCF internship at Framar in Niagara Falls into a job as a Social Media Specialist for the company, marketing to 1.1 million followers across platforms through creative content creation. She says she learned how to integrate marketing in CPCF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a marketing mindset when approaching every task I&#8217;m assigned at work has helped me immensely to think strategically with the brand\u2019s identity, positioning and goals in mind,\u201d says Terrio, who is now pursuing a master\u2019s degree in Professional Communication at Toronto Metropolitan University. \u201cThis marketing background has given me an edge and made my transition from working on assignments to working on real marketing campaigns fairly seamless, which I am grateful for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donnicia Ellis-Dawson (BA \u201921), who majored in Business Communication and minored in Tourism, says she didn\u2019t know how well her degree had prepared her until she was on the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I loved about the Business Communication program is that it\u2019s so broad, you have the chance to study multiple different career paths like marketing, human resources and event planning all within your four years,\u201d says Ellis-Dawson, who now works as an assistant in the unscripted content department at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). \u201cNot only that, but Media Communications overlaps with the program, allowing you to learn about journalism, public relations and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81016\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81016\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-81016\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Donicia-Ellis-Dawson.png\" alt=\"A woman in a beige blazer and black shirt stands in front of a beige background.\" width=\"233\" height=\"313\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Business Communication graduate Donnicia Ellis-Dawson (BA \u201921)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Adjunct Professor Kate Cassidy has helmed the CPCF internship course, COMM\/FILM\/PCUL 4F00, for the past six years.
